It was a combination of mixtapes with either El or Max’s handwriting scrawled on them. One, worryingly, just said Eddie vs. Jonathan. She chose the one with a little doodle of two wolves on the case that read exit signs in Max’s big block letters.
Max wasn’t paying her any attention, fingers tapping the wheel like music was already playing. Robin wondered if she still felt a sort of reliance on it after Henry, if maybe silence scared her as much as it did Robin. She hadn’t aged a lot since then, still looked so much like the same fourteen year old girl who needed Kate Bush to survive. Except five years had passed; Max was a high school graduate with a job and a girlfriend and a plan for the future. Maybe Robin really was the only one still stuck in the past.
She pushed the tape in just as the light turned green. Tracy Chapman absorbed all the air around them with her first words.

Or maybe it’s because the last time she heard him say those words, they sounded like they’d been punched out of him back then, too: at Starcourt, his mouth twisting—so ready to laugh at himself—while sirens lit up his face, red and blue.

Robin's mood does a total 180° as she begins thinking that maybe Steve is right for the first time in his life. “Yeah, alright. Alrighty, I’m alright with that.” Wow, it was almost astonishing how many alrights Robin fit in one word waterfall. Incredible. Really, it is!
“Are you and Steve Harrington dating?”
Robin blinks, finding herself laughing. “What?”

Summary
The kettle whistles, she shakes her head as she swirls hot water around the pot before dumping it in the sink. "They were going to grow old together." She says, dropping teabags into the pot and pouring water over them. She watches it steep briefly, before replacing the lid.
The statement sits heavy around both of them. Robin and Steve were going to grow old together. A fact. Now they can’t. Also a fact.
Now, Steve won’t ever grow old, and Robin might die young too, and Eddie stands uselessly in the kitchen in front of a woman grieving the love her daughter had and the boy who gave it to her. Mourning possibilities that will never happen, even if the rest of them stop the nearing end of the world.
Quietly, to the teapot, Mrs. Buckley says "I don't think she'll ever recover from this."
Neither does Eddie.Steve and Eddie swapped places, and with his previous wounds, Steve dies in the Upside Down. Eddie tries to help Robin in the aftermath, sees just how much Steve meant to the people around him, while they all still have to fight Vecna.
