Summary
The day Nino and Alya met he hadn’t really noticed her. Sure, he knew she was there. She was one of the new students. But he was mad at Ms. Bustier for moving him to the front, and then Adrien had told him Chloé had been his only friend, and that was the saddest thing Nino had ever heard in his life.
When Alya and Marinette kept approaching their hangouts, Marinette hardly said anything. Or rather, she tried to talk, but it just didn’t make any sense. So Alya would often take over. She was confident and well spoken, and he couldn’t help but pay attention when she was excited about something.
But he hadn’t liked her. No, that wasn’t quite right. He had liked her just fine. But he hadn’t been crushing on her.

Alya hadn’t really ever spared a thought for Nino. Like she didn’t object to him or anything. He seemed nice and friendly. But she didn’t know him. Not really.
She probably wouldn’t have interacted with him much except he was her best friend’s crush’s best friend.
So in trying to get Marinette to talk to Adrien, she ended up talking to Nino. And he was definitely amusing, self conscious in a way that was adorable. But she wasn’t actually interested. It was nothing personal.

“So how do we switch back?” Marinette asked, gesturing between herself and Adrien currently occupying the other's body. “How do we do whatever that just was?”
Tikki floated up to her face, writhing her hands together. “About that… you will switch back, but… well, Plagg and I have had a lot of practice with this over time. And well… you have not. It often takes our chosen a lot longer to find balance between each other. Once you find balance the change will happen all by itself.”
“How long?” Adrien asked.
“A month? Maybe longer?” Tikki didn't sound certain.
“A year tops,” Plagg added helpfully.
“A year?!” Marinette repeated, her eyes bulging.
“I doubt it will take you and Adrien that long!” Tikki rushed to reassure. “Because you already know each other. Balance is about understanding your other half.”
“You think they understand each other right now?” Plagg asked.
“Hush!” Tikki scolded.

Every thousand years or so Tikki and Plagg switch bodies whenever there is an imblance between destruction and creation. Sometimes, on very rare occasions, that swap happens while they are transformed, and their holders get affected too.
