Bruce died and Cass couldn’t breathe for a week. She didn’t want to believe it at first, didn’t want to even think of it. She knew Bruce and she knew death and they didn’t fit together, not at all.
He was gone, gone like Brenda and Bludhaven, gone like Steph had been. Like Faizul. She felt it inside of her, so keenly it was as if she had killed him by her own hand. She could search the whole earth and not find a trace of him. It was too much. The pressure was squeezing her insides, left her constantly choking for air. She couldn’t stop dry heaving.
Or: Bruce is dead. Instead of leaving, Cass stays in Gotham. She learns a thing or two about being Batman.

Light from the tavern across the street provides a backdrop, casting a gentle golden glow over the sill. It must be a hallucination, though, or some impossible trick of the light, because the face hovering outside the window is -

His own. His own, but not his own. It's wrong, by which Occtis means it's right. The cheekbones aren't sunken; the flesh has blood beneath it; the eyes are just a normal shade of green. The brow - his brow? - is furrowed in frustration. The - his - eyes are red and welling with tears, which isn't right, because he definitely can't even cry anymore -
"Oh, fuck!" the other-Occtis says, making eye contact with him. "Oh fucking Hells, wait, it's actually you -"

But Ms. Curnow was nice in a way they hadn't quite been. She did things like this for her student: pointing her to her favorite part of the song, saving the music lesson for last, as a treat, because she knew how Emily liked it.

He’s twisting it like a bottlecap. Hazel looks away. “I can get you out of here,” he says. He’s still twisting, brown eyes unfocused and glazing.
Hazel’s lungs are filled with water. “What?”
“The Doors of Death are open. You can leave.” Hazel doesn’t know what the doors are, but he’s looking at her now and she knows he isn’t lying. She knows she can follow him, she knows it by the cold feeling down her spine. She can do it.
“Okay.”
He nods. “Let’s go.”
Nico brings Hazel to Camp Jupiter from Asphodel.

If he were a better wizard, a smarter one, he'd know how to dispel it. He'd know - he'd know how to fight, or flee, or turn back time and tell Aranessa not to open the door. He'd know what to do right now, but he doesn't, he doesn't know what to do, he's just so scared. So Occtis thrashes in place, struggles wildly beneath the immaterial grip of a dozen shadow-soaked hands.
It doesn't work. He isn't going to get away. But at least he won't have made it easy for them.

There's a pair of kids whacking each other with sticks—a steel-gray dragonborn hawking potions and dyes—a noblewoman with a stupid little purse dog, the two of them turning up their noses at a selection of vegetables—a drow wobbling on his feet, supported by friends who seem nearly as unsteady as he is—
"That." Weeks of journeying together mean that Lae'zel doesn't outright point at people anymore, but the tilt of her head is just as obvious. "That—creature."
