It ached, seeing how brightly they shone together, chasing away the darkness around them. How lovestruck the other calamity was in the presence of his god, nervous and careful with his every step and action, as if he was scared of accidentally scaring away the prince who regarded him with the very same lovestruck expression.
There was no space for it between them, even as it longed to be by both their sides. There was nothing it could do but watch from afar.

Summary
Not for the first time, He Xuan was sure that he had finally snapped and entered a state of psychosis.
He'd been warned about hallucinations, after the prison sentence- In fact, it was the first thing that the government-mandated therapist had mentioned to him. She'd been right, actually- The people disappearing around corners and hints of laughter when he was fully alone had become part of his routine, and he tended to ignore anything that couldn't be explained by a trick of the light, or mishearing another, normal noise in the distance. It wasn't worth it to drive himself crazy– Crazier– over something like a few shadowy figures or some strange noises.
That being said, there was no way he hadn't lost it this time.
“Helllooooo? I can see you jump every time I talk, I know you can hear me!” The voice called out again, louder this time and close enough to his ear to be painful. He did flinch back at the noise, but gave no other acknowledgement to what he was sure was simply the most intense hallucination he'd had to date. If he just ignored it, it'd most likely fade out as he got to work– And gods, did he have work to do.

Summary
The water was so shallow as to provide a mostly unobstructed view from above. And the cave roof did let in some light from uneven stones, so there was no real darkness to protect him. The light reflected off the surface of the water and sent blue and yellow reflections back onto the cave walls. “You don’t have to be afraid of me. I’m not gonna hurt you.”
“I am not afraid,” He Xuan hissed, hand tightening to his knife.
Water splashed as the human kicked his feet in the shallows. “So you do speak. I was wondering if you didn’t speak my language, and if I had gone mad thinking you said something to me when you dragged me onto shore.”
He Xuan’s eyes narrowed, tail resting amongst the silt in the cave’s bottom. “If I had known you would stalk me, I wouldn’t have bothered. The world with one less human in it is a better place.”
“Have to agree with you there.” The water splashed, vibrations traveling through as the human kicked his legs. He Xuan swam to the side and peered around the rock. The human’s eye fell on him, but he was hidden enough not to show too much of himself. “You don’t have to keep hiding. I promise I won’t hurt you.”

Summary
Shi Qingxuan had heard about pirates and the ferocity that led them to kill and plunder villages and ports, but never, in his short life of twenty years, did he expect to witness all of these things firsthand.
He Xuan is a violent pirate captain with a vendetta against Shi Wudu, so he decides to take it out on Shi Qingxuan instead.
