He knew a girl once.
She was there, right before his eyes. Human and alive, living and breathing with a light that seemed to light up this dark and depressing hellscape.
He blinked, and suddenly she ceased to exist.
She wasn't there, and that was what sent him over the edge.
He spent months looking for her. Months of searching alleyways and abandoned buildings, praying to whatever god there was that he didn't find her there, dead or alive. He would have rather found her dead. At least he would have been free of this desire to protect.
After a while, he was free of that desire to protect her.
The story of a girl he knew grew faded. Her memory turned to glimmering mush with each passing month. He lost all hopes of ever seeing her outside of the occasional memory. Her memory and the memory of so many others haunted him. He believed her dead, lost and gone to the underground while he lived in what had once been her dream.
