Bucky shook his head. “Then don’t fight anymore, Steve.” He said it like it was obvious, like it was easy, like it was an actual choice.
Steve looked down at himself, at his body made for war, upgraded, enhanced, super. He sighed. “I don’t know how to do anything else.”
In 2023, Steve Rogers lays down his shield, joins Twitter, and finds purpose beyond the battlefield—with Bucky Barnes at his side.
A sequel to ‘In Repose,' but it definitely stands alone.

The day after leaving the hospital, still woozy on the massively high quantities of morphine they gave him, Steve dreams about a metal arm around his throat and warm, salty fingers in his mouth, just the way he likes.
The next day, there are plate marks on his throat, fading by the minute, and his breathing skyrockets as he touches them with reverence.
Steve gets fished out of the Potomac, and Bucky comes to him.

“Bucky,” Steve says, and it’s hardly more than a whisper, as if he’s afraid to say more.
“Most days that’s who I am. The longer I’m out of their custody the more my memory comes back. Whatever they were doing to my brain doesn’t seem to be permanent, which I guess is good. Except I’m remembering everything, Stevie. Things before the war. During the war. After I fell...all my missions.” He lifts his eyes to look at Steve, and there’s pain there, pain and anger and...longing? He’s not sure. But Steve looks like he desperately wants to say or do something, probably hug him.

Steve turns that red color he does anytime someone compliments him, scoffing as he knocks his shoulders into Bucky’s again. “You’re soused, Buck.”
Bucky grins, wrapping his arm around Steve’s shoulder and dragging him close against his side. “Yep.” He still thinks Steve’s the prettiest thing he’s ever seen, but he keeps that to himself this time.

When Steve volunteered to take the stones back, Bucky had an inkling that he was hiding something. But he played his part. He recited their old goodbye. They shared a hug so quick that Bucky barely felt it. Bucky tried to let that be that, but he couldn’t help it. He told Steve he’d miss him. And Steve told him it would be okay, and that was when Bucky knew. Steve was supposed to be gone for five seconds, their time, so why did that sound so much like a goodbye? But Bucky didn’t know what to do. He stepped back, forced a smile onto his face, that he knew didn’t reach his eyes, and he let him go. It took everything he had in him, but he did it.
He was certain he’d just said goodbye to Steve Rogers for the last time.

In the year they’d been traveling, there had been moments. Times their hands would brush together, times they’d lay curled together with the excuse that there wasn’t enough space, and one memorable time they’d both managed to get drunk thanks to Asgardian alcohol and ended up in bed together. They hadn’t talked about it in the morning, brushing it off with awkward laughter and the fact that neither of them had been able to get drunk in years. But somehow, Bucky had just expected that one day they’d figure it out. That either he’d work up the courage to tell Steve exactly how he felt, or Steve would get impatient as he always does and be the one to tip the scales.
Bucky goes with Steve to return the Infinity Stones and things turn out much differently.

He saw Thanos snapping his fingers and then tyrant's confusion and fear. If he was about to die, that was going to be worth it. He noticed Bucky fighting in the background, Tony and Carol watching him closely, Thanos' devastated look and he smiled. That was it, he thought.
He snapped his fingers and fell lifelessly on the ground.

Bucky counts the seconds in his head as Bruce counts them out loud, still messing with the control panel. His heart is racing, only able to be calm with the fists he keeps jammed in his pockets. Five seconds passes. Six. Seven. Eight. Bucky shuts his eyes.
But then he reaches 300 and the platform rattles.
The arms poised over the platform glow and open up and all three of them have to blink at the flash of light.
When Bucky opens his eyes, Steve is standing there still in the suit he left in, minus one suitcase of infinity stones.
