“Did you have a… secret past life?”
Martin snorts. “As if I had the time.” He shakes his head, turning back to the task at hand. “I wanted to, but I was mostly boring, you know? Go to work, come home… the worst I did was get a tattoo.”
Jon feels his need to know almost take him out at the knees; where? Of what? Why? When did he get it? Between Martin’s brief sojourn in document storage and their awkward first night on the sofa, Jon’s seen most of him—where is it? Forcing himself to be normal about this, he nods stiffly. Words gather in a landslide against his teeth and he clenches his jaw, brows raised in an expression that he hopes exudes polite curiosity.
From Martin’s smirk, he misses the mark by a mile.

If he tells Martin then stays, if he dies, what has he done then? Offered Martin his love on a platter, then snatched it all away, shown him a future where each of them holds a little hand, then buried it in flames and broken plastic?
jon and martin say goodbye before the unknowing. jon dies. jon wakes up. after that, things go about as well as you would expect.

The sound of a passing car pulled Jon back to the present. His eyes blinked open. His arm ached again, the belt forgotten on the floor.
The guilt never really left. It just changed form.
It was pills, then heroin. It was missed deadlines and avoidance. It was limping without a cane because pride still whispered louder than common sense. It was ignoring Martin’s kind eyes and throwing himself off cliffs he built with his own hands.
It was Elias.
It was himself.
Jon stared at the ceiling until the high thinned out into nausea and ache.
Maybe next week with Martin, he’d talk about it.
Or maybe he wouldn’t.
He hadn't decided yet if he wanted to be forgiven.
