What if, the Russians hadn't kept Steve and Robin together as they got their answers?
I found it kind of odd that the Russians almost instantly put the two in the same room when beating Steve up didn't work. That's just not you're basic torture routine. That's the last ditch effort.
When Dustin and Erica go to save the two teens, they only find Robin. They don't have time to go back for Steve. When they all meet in the mall, they realize they can't leave Steve behind, monster or no monster. So rather than attempt to flee, they go down into the base to destroy the gate and save their friend. They hope...

While down in the tunnels, the tunnels close, leaving Steve and the kids trapped. Now, they have to wait for the others to find them. Steve promised he’d keep these kids safe, so that’s what he’s going to do. After all, he’s a damn good babysitter. Even in creepy Upside Down tunnels that are collapsing more by the minute.

Summary
Eddie made a strangled disbelieving noise, expression flickering. “You are not apologizing to me right now, for like, feeling a normal way about stuff. I can’t believe you.”
Steve pushed a shaking hand through his hair. His heart rate no longer in his ears meant he felt he could at least think a little more clearly. “Maybe it was the heat. Doesn’t always have to be something messed up, right?”
Eddie gave him a placating nod. “Sure, heat exhaustion is a helluva thing.”
It had been happening a lot recently. The… forgetting. Zonking out. Whatever. He was pretty sure he was just extra exhausted, it had been a few weeks since everything but it might have just been the adrenaline or something finally wearing off. Sometimes it was like he just forgot someone was speaking, or couldn’t remember for a moment what they’d been talking about. Like blinking out of a fog maybe.
It does not get better, in fact, it actually continues to get worse.
