“Then… what do we need to talk about?” He watches Phainon take a hesitant step forward. Mydei curses, frustrated, and jerks his head up.
“I think we should take a break.”

Summary
In battle, a Kremnoan was expected to dominate by force of strength and will, to leave no survivors in service of Nikador’s insatiable hunger. It isn’t that there is no word for romance in the Kremnoan language—it is that the word for to love is the same as the one for to fight for.
Explaining this to Phainon, in far fewer words, produces…interesting results.
after some conversation and a little negotiation, Phainon and Mydei decide to try something new.

Mydei, Alpha Crown Prince of Castrum Kremnos, has the pick of all the kingdom for his omega partner. When a terribly handsome man, six feet tall and scented like pomegranates, declares himself the eligible omega for Aedes Elysiae - he cannot help himself. This Phainon shall be his mate.

“I love you,” Mydei blurts without preamble.
Phainon stops entirely. His eyes widen. Mydei’s hands twitch at his sides. He holds Phainon’s gaze, jaw clenched and body wound like a spring, watching Phainon swallow—Adam’s apple bobbing.
“What?” he breathes, the word cracking at the end.
Mydei takes a deep breath.
“I love you,” he repeats. “I offer my body and soul to you—my equal in every way, the one worthy to stand beside me. Across thirty-three million cycles, my affections for you have never changed. If our old promises during every one of those cycles still continue to mean something to you as well, then I intend to honor them starting today—if you will let me.”
(Mydei and Phainon get together. As it turns out, that’s the easy part.)

Summary
As Mydei has before, he takes the lead and rounds the corner first - only to freeze completely. Even with his back to Phainon, Phainon can see how his entire body has gone rigid, posture stiff and dropping lower, like he can’t decide whether to fight or flee.
Mydei looks stunned to silence, as if completely unable to react.
“What happened?” Phainon asks, urgently, and immediately steps forward -
“Wait,” Mydei says as Phainon steps up beside him, a second too late. But the edge of panic in his voice makes Phainon turn as he moves. Mydei’s gaze snaps to Phainon, and Phainon has never seen that expression on him. His eyes are wide, staring at him but as if unseeing, chest rising in quick, shallow breaths, clear tension in his muscles. “Wait, Phainon -”
[Phainon must ferry Mydei's soul back to his body. The Flame Reaver has found it first.]
