Joli is rapidly losing the ability to begin a conversation with her colleague in a way that doesn’t start with the words “I’m worried about…”. She knew what she was getting into when making it her life’s goal to give the kids in the city a better life than the half of her family that had survived their third resettlement had. She spends a lot of time fretting about things, it’s ostensibly what she’s best at, apart from speaking four languages reasonably well and doing the voices when reading from a story book. It’s no wonder then, that the first thing she says while she and Aim are fixing up the rumbling generator with duct tape and a prayer is “I’m worried about Nona.”

Gideon had always insisted that she was never scared of Harrowhark. Throughout all of their years at each others’ throats, Gideon maintained that it would have been laughably simple to break her spindly necromancer’s bird-boned body over one knee. But despite her determined bravado and her habit of laughing in the face of death (or in the face of the Reverend Daughter, which was about the same thing), some unshakeable part of Gideon couldn’t help but feel the cold knife of fear press into her lungs whenever she was reminded of Harrowhark’s ire.

"How did you lose it?" Coronabeth asked, more softly than her sister's shrill voice. The group assembled at Canaan House barely knew her, and yet here they were, asking the most irritatingly personal questions, and acting as if they were being kind and thoughtful by prying into her secrets.
"I dropped my pen into a vat of acid and reached in to grab it without thinking," Harrow said dryly.
Coronabeth recoiled, screwing up her pretty nose. Ianthe looked unsure whether to believe her or not. Their meatslab of cavalier just stared blankly.
"The Daughter of the Ninth House was blessed in this manner from her birth, as a symbol of her strength and power over the mysteries of necromancy," Ortus interjected. Harrow glared at him.
"Oh," Coronabeth said, an expression of disgusting sympathy on her flawless face. "But then you would never have known who your soulmate was!"
Harrow's glare intensified. "My soulmate is bones."

Summary
In Drearbrurh, the sight of a sword to Gideon’s head or a hand around her throat might have been cause for celebration. Hell, had Harrow both the opportunity and spine for it, she might have driven the sword through Gideon’s skull herself, an effective solution to the countless problems wrapped up in Gideon’s sloppy robes and sloppier face paint. Instead, Harrow pressed her outstretched hand into that vulnerable place at the base of Gideon’s skull, digging her fingers in tight to prevent them from lashing out.
Her own voice came unexpectedly, rising from some unknown depth. Harrow said, “Your cavalier drew on my cavalier.”
A Gideon the Ninth Chapter 7 rewrite, written from Harrow’s POV, because I am obsessed with this scene.
