Summary
Exiled from the Shirai Ryu and left fatherless by betrayal, Hanzo is forced to submit to his mother's plan for vengeance. This plan includes an alliance with the rival Lin Kuei clan and her marriage of convenience to its leader. Hanzo expects nothing from his new home and family but treachery, and he intends to avoid any closeness, guided solely by his duty to revenge and cold calculation. "I could never hate Hanzo. Or raise a hand against him," Kuai Liang stands firm in his conviction. For him, this is an unshakable truth. "Even if our paths were to diverge."
The very thought causes him deep pain. He once believed he would never abandon Bi-Han. But... this is entirely different. Even with a broken heart, he still couldn't kill his brother-enemy. He certainly couldn't kill Hanzo. He knows this.
"I did not expect you to be close in this life, either," the god admits. "But just as in the past, you are once again the closest to each other, bound by an unspoken vow of loyalty. Once again, you fell in love. Once again, you save each other. It is... fascinating."
"But you said we were mortal enemies?" the pyromancer asks, confused.
"And who said you remained only that?" Liu Kang smiles. And with that, he leaves, planting even more unresolved questions in the soul of the Shirai Ryu Grandmaster.

"Is this... me?" Hanzo's voice sounded strange—tight and clipped.
Kuai Liang went completely still. Panic crashed over him in an instant.
Had he really forgotten to move the portrait to the separate folder?
How could he have made such a mistake?
He could only stare at Hanzo in alarm, desperately trying to remember if he'd written anything compromising.
Hanzo sat down beside him, eagerly studying his portrait. Kuai Liang caught glimpses of it—Hanzo smiling softly, tenderly, his features bathed in sunlight. Then his gaze darted to the inscription at the bottom. He never wrote captions for his sketches. But Hanzo had always been the exception.
"In the city of rains, it's always sunny," Hanzo read aloud, his voice hushed and rough with wonder. "In the city of rains..."
Kuai Liang didn't know what to do. Should he joke it away—claim it was just practice? Say it had been an accident? If only Hanzo didn't discover the stacks of other portraits... the unspoken confessions...
"Why is it always sunny in the city of rains, Kuai Liang?" Hanzo turned toward him. He was looking straight at him, intently, his eyes reflecting light.

Hanzo sees Kuai Liang's pain. His quiet devotion. Remembers his confusion after that day when everything changed. Three years ago. How he tried to talk. To understand. But Hanzo kept silent, turned away. He couldn't give him any answers.
"Do you not love me anymore?"
Hanzo remained silent. He couldn't say "yes". He couldn't say "no".
"Do you regret everything? Do you want me to leave?"
"No—" A sharp voice, an order in tone, but a plea in truth.
"Do you still love me?" A question brimming with desperate hope. So hard to conceal.
Yes. Yes, I do.
He can no longer say it aloud. It's too great a luxury. Even though he wants to. The gods know how desperately he wants to. In some way, he envies his past self—the one who knew nothing, the one who still hoped.

Kuai Liang swung his arms, ready to continue fighting, when something strange caught his attention. A gaze, sharp and attentive, seemed to pierce the back of his head. He turned and locked eyes with the commander. His heart beat faster. Scorpion! He clenched his fists and defiantly met the golden-brown eyes of his enemy. He wouldn’t go down easily. However, Scorpion simply waved a commanding hand, and the Fire Nation soldiers began to retreat.
“We’ve already got the one we need,” the wind carried the words to him. “The main objective is complete.”
Kuai Liang frowned, but he needed to tend to the wounded. He knelt beside Tomas, helping him up, and noticed a wound on his side. Water flowed from his hands, pulsing blue, healing the injury. The fighting comrades around them stopped, confused, watching the retreating enemy soldiers.
“Commander Hasashi, what about that bender? Doesn’t he meet the criteria too?”
“One is enough,” the voice carried a crooked smirk. “He’ll explain all the secrets to us.”
At that moment, as he watched the retreating soldiers, Kuai Liang didn’t know that that day marked the beginning of the end. For the Fire Nation had captured Bi-Han.

“Hello,” a voice called out behind him. He turned just in time to watch Hanzo sit down next to him.
Hanzo was a strange man, and Kuai didn’t know what exactly to think of him. Most of the time he seemed stern and angry. Yet when he looked at Kuai Liang, it was like all that melted away, and he became soft and gentle. It made Kuai’s heart race somehow. There was a small bitter part of him that told him Hanzo looked at him like that out of pity. The other told him he was clearly different to Hanzo somehow, and that made him special.
He both loved and hated that Hanzo looked at him so kindly.

“It’s a mineral that was only found on the planet Edenia, before…” Kuai trailed off a little, and Hanzo swallowed. Edenia had been reduced to ruins by Outworld, and given Kuai Liang’s past with their academy… Well, it was no wonder he quickly tried to move on. “Anyway, because it was only found on that one planet, it’s now super rare! It supposedly had some unique properties too.”
“What kind of properties?”
“They say that if you lick it, it’ll show your heart's desire,” Kuai explained, looking over the rock slightly. “I don’t know how true that is though.”
“If you wish to test that hypothesis, it’ll be 150 credits,” the shopkeeper told them, looking a little grossed out by the idea of them licking the rock.
