“Sorry to eavesdrop. I’m Sam, your upstairs neighbor. And I’m just saying, they’re plants, not pets. If anything dies, you can get a replacement. Probably easier to pull off than convincing a classroom of kids that the class pet hasn’t been replaced, anyway. Like, Snowpuff 2.0 didn’t even have white fur.”
Steve inches past some potted plants and dodges the hanging basket that holds a thriving pothos, then leans out over his balcony railing to peer upwards. He can see a man resting his forearms against the railing of the balcony above, but he can’t see much other than the brown skin of Sam’s forearms and a little bit of his profile.
“Hi,” he calls out. “I’m Steve. Your, uh, downstairs neighbor, obviously.”
When Steve's stuck riding out the pandemic quarantine alone, he's grateful to make a new friend in his upstairs neighbor Sam. Only the more Steve gets to know Sam via their socially-distanced balcony chats, the less sure he is about whether Sam knows he's Captain America. Which is a problem, because this friendship is turning into a crush, and Steve's long past the point of being able to reveal that information without awkwardness. Which is how Steve ends up with an accidental secret identity. Oops.

In the beginning, God made the heavens and the earth. And then God made humans. Some he made Alpha, some Beta, some Omega. There were some that he made for each other. Some were born to gravitate to one another, their hands made to hold, their hearts to love. Sometimes it wasn’t always easy, some loved and lost, or lost before they could love. Some were nudged towards each other as infants and ripped away as soon as adults realized they were two halves of one whole. Some lives are so intertwined, that if one died, it would be too cruel to not let them both go.
Whatever God had made, it wasn’t what the world had taken it to be. In 2011, the frozen body of Captain America was found in the depths of the Arctic, hauled out and thawed. The world waited with baited breath for their favorite hero to smile in thanks for having been saved. The world waited. And waited. Captain America never thanked them. Steve Rogers, who would have rathered stayed dead, cursed them.
In 1945, just a few months after the death of Bucky Barnes, Steve Rogers drove the Valkyrie into the ice without a second thought because it was the end of the line. Not because he was a brave Alpha, but because he was a grieving Omega.

Steve doesn’t have any scent when he rescues Bucky from Hydra. No one can know he's an omega super soldier or he'll be shut up in a lab until the end of the war. The army wants to keep it hidden and Steve doesn't have a choice.
Steve isn't too happy masquerading as an alpha but he'll do it to stay out of a lab. But someone knows his secret and isn't above using it to get what they want.
All Bucky can do is try to keep Steve together in the aftermath.
