Werewolves are real, and they are out for blood. At least that is the root of the legends and myths, fairytales laced with nothing but warnings to children not to go into the woods at night — or else they’ll disappear and never be seen again.
To appease the creatures that lay within the cursed forest, single human males & female are offered up to the creatures. In a yearly hunt where the men and women are sent into the forest to never be seen again, this festival/sacrifice guarantees that the majority of the villages will remain untouched.
Unbeknownst to the villages, the hunt is where the werewolves find their mate(s) and take humans as their own. These human mates will provide them with heirs, pups to extend their lineage. With the (un)luck of the draw, your name is cast into the yearly hunt as a sacrifice, a victim of the beasts that run wild on the other side of the barrier.
