Thanks to Dr. Grace's scientific advancements both before and especially after his time travel, it would look suspicious if Stratt DIDN'T send him to the UNESCO conference to share his findings with the field. But that means letting him loose in the world for a few days. There are other people out there. Mein Gott, she can feel the headache forming already.

Starting or entering a thrum is typically a conscious decision, but in times of high emotion they can start spontaneously. Pebbles especially often at least put out the invitation to thrums when experiencing intense emotions. A lot of the time, the call to thrum is not answered- for example, if a child is upset at losing a game of 🎵🎶🎵-🎵🎶🎵and is having an outburst that the other children do not engage with- or else a parent or guardian may answer it and conduct a small, spontaneous thrum to help their child learn to control and manage their emotions. A particularly good performance may occasionally result in a spontaneous thrum between spectators if the story is particularly exciting or emotional for the audience, but this is rare as it is generally considered impolite to initiate a thrum in a public space without prior arrangements, especially if it may interrupt an ongoing event, although some parts of Erid looked more favorably upon it than others. Grace once compared it to the social attitude around cheering or making noise in a ‘movie theater’ or other public space- it differs across cultures.

He can hear the scritch-scratch of his five claws on Xenonite. He can hear the machines, humming their false song. He can hear the silent expanse of space. The distant stars. His friends, dead in the hull. And the building feeling, deep in every cell — every fibre of his body — that something is so incredibly wrong.
Rocky knows this disease. Exhaustion. And all alone in space, there is no cure.
It is a primal requirement that Eridians sleep only under the trusting gaze of their companions. Rocky spends forty-six years alone in space.

“Shut it, Abby, you’re gonna wake him up!”
Grace buries his head deeper into the crook of his elbow, desperate to get a few more minutes of sleep, the movement elicits the noise of giggling from the room around him. His brain doesn’t register anything strange about the sound, until he remembers that he’s supposed to be in the middle of space. Space, where Grace should be completely alone, and Rocky should be well on his way back to Erid.
He jolts upright, suddenly far more awake. The quiet giggling erupts into full blown laughter, and Grace suddenly realises that he’s in his classroom, and the students laughing at him are the same ones he last taught fifteen years ago.
Son of a biscuit.
He’s on Earth again.
Or
Ryland Grace gets sent back in time and finds that getting launched into space is a lot harder when you aren’t being dragged there against your will.

Very gently, Rocky turns himself so his injured arm is right up against the xenonite. He keeps it in his brace constantly, tucked under his carapace, so I've barely seen it at all. Looking at it now, the discolouration has spread a lot and part of it's just…gone. Like when acid eats away at metal. I kind of want to throw up.
