“Steve.” Dustin’s voice. He sounded panicked. “I really need your help.”

Steve glanced over at his alarm clock. It was two in the morning. “What the fuck, Dustin? It’s the middle of the night!”

“Yeah, but. I’ve got a situation here. You see, I didn’t quite think through the fact that I’m all brains and no brawn. And this particular project is going to require… a fair bit of brawn.”

    “At two am?”

“It can’t exactly wait. I’ve got two dead bodies sitting on gurneys beside my car and I can’t lift them in.”

“You what?” Steve snapped, coming fully alert now.

    Summary

Steve desperately needed an out. He couldn't handle his own life anymore, he needed to leave everything he'd ever known behind. And yet, he couldn't.

His husband wouldn't let him leave like that. Not when Steve felt like a prize to him, something to be owned. And Steve didn't have the money to leave him because he'd been dumb and trusting and in love.

And then, there's Eddie. Who might be just another client but he makes Steve feels things and Steve doesn't want to fucking feel anything right now.

    He just wants to leave.

OR; Stripper Steve meets Eddie at work and Eddie can be precisely what Steve needs. Can offer him the chance of leaving his own life behind, if Steve plays his cards right.

“Just - just don’t make a big deal out of it.” Steve bit out. “Please.”

“Scout’s honor.” Eddie held his fingers up in a mocking salute, an impish, shit-eating grin taking over his face. The sight of it sent Steve’s heart fluttering, but he ignored it in favor of closing his eyes.

“You weren’t even a scout.” He huffed. “Just get on with it.”

Post-battle with Vecna, Steve needs some patching up. He's got some scars he's a little ashamed of.

    Summary

“There was a fire. At the mall. I worked there? At Scoops Ahoy.”

The way he says the last part sounds strange, like it’s really important somehow that Eddie believes him.

“Okay,” he says, then adds, “Is that why you look like that?”

Eddie’s never met a fire with fists, but he wants Steve to tell him what happened—not just assume.

There’s a beat of silence, like Steve’s weighing his options, and Eddie knows a lie’s coming before Steve even opens his mouth.

“Yeah. Building caved in. We made it out—Robin and I. Paramedics checked me over and said I couldn’t drive, so I decided to walk.”

Almost ten miles, Eddie estimates. Sure. Totally normal thing to do in the middle of the night, battered and bruised, after escaping a fire.

But he’s pretty sure that’s all he’s going to get, so he settles on, “Good thing I came along, then.”

    “Yeah.”

    -------------------------------------------

Eddie doesn’t expect to find Steve Harrington half-dead on a dark road in the middle of the night — or to be the one he clings to after.

“You’re my best friend,” she said, voice an angry whisper as she clutched his bruised hands hard enough to hurt. “You are my best friend and you saved my life. Now go the fuck to sleep so we can wake up in an hour and make sure your brain isn’t soup.”

In the dim light of her bedroom, she could just barely see him frown. God, he looked like shit. “What kind of soup?”
