When Zanka is kidnapped by the Raiders, Jabber realizes he can't let his rival die. He breaks Zanka out, and, realizing he can't go back to the raiders without deadly consequences, reluctantly agrees to go with Zanka to Cleaner HQ.
There, he and Zanka develop into something more than just rivals.

There would be another two stops within the next ten minutes before they descended into a tunnel beneath the river, then half a dozen towns before the end of the line. The girl Evan liked to watch always disembarked at the first stop outside the city limits; his came very last, most of an hour later.
At the back of the car, he heard a bitten-off shriek.

It was common knowledge that Givers shared a piece of themselves with their Vital Instruments. However, many non-Givers didn’t know that this led to a more physical connection with the object. It’s regarded as a sort of coming-of-age experience for a new Giver to gradually begin to feel things through their Instruments. Some of the more philosophical Givers even claim that it’s because you need to pour some of your soul into an Instrument to use it.
