A lot of people really love Ash Ketchum. He's loved across the world and regions, and people are more than excited to see him take the mantle of Alolan Champion.
Except the Orange Archipelago decides that they had Ash first, and Rudy makes that clear on social media. So forms Team Orange.
Then Alola decides that can't slide, and Team Alola quickly follows.
Kanto reminds the other two regions where Ash is from, and Team Kanto comes in.
Kalos joins in.And thus, a four-way custody battle for Ash Ketchum, between two regions that make sense, and two that really don't.

As Ash took a look around the current area Mallow proposed a small tour of the school, maybe he'd notice his mother somewhere. So he agreed and he and Mallow set off. They walked all around the campus, Mallow pointed out so many interesting things. Eventually, they had gone pretty much everywhere.
"Damn. Still no mom," Ash sighed as they walked to their last stop.
"I'm sure you'll find her soon," Mallow said before turning and knocking on a door, "Principal Oak? I've brought a new student."
"Wait what? I'm not-"
Inside the room there was... his mom.

Ash maintained a weak bond with Greninja even after Kalos. He was used to it. It was always there. But when Lusamine's escapade with the Ultra Beast took him outside the usual dimension he existed in, it snapped the connection he had grown used to. This causes unintended side effects.
Like aggression. Like deliriousness. Like seeing dead Pokemon.Professor Kukui just wants Ash to get better. Why did there have to be so many moving pieces? First Pikachu is acting weird, then Team Rocket are the most helpful, and then he has to sit on call with a Champion and Professor Sycamore, all while he's fairly certain Pikachu is threatening a local god.
