“I’m just saying,” Davrin said with a tone of voice that came only from someone who knew what they were about to say was entirely inappropriate for the conversation, “you’re a lot older than her.”
Rook didn’t need to be a genius to know who Davrin was talking too, or what the topic of conversation was. It had been chronic since the others had picked up on the fact her and Emmrich were more than just friends.
It had been passing comments at first, conversations about their age differences, the difference in their looks, the difference in their life experiences. At one point, Rook was fairly certain that she had heard Davrin offering sex tips to Emmrich.
Rook put her hand to the door, ready to interrupt the conversation when another voice joined the chorus.

It tasted like Ariadne. Her bite. How she burned down his throat and boiled in his stomach. An addictive delight, tinged with the inescapable aftertaste of regret that plagued a treat. Something that tasted too good to resist, though he knew better.
Her heavy-hand, and decadence.
Her affection for him, overwhelming as it was unapologetic.
He didn't need his mother's torte. He needed hers. And now that he got a taste, he was ravenous.
It awakened something so deep-seeded within him he didn't recognize it at first. He didn't know how to appease it. Dredged from his depths, it ordered his acknowledgment with the same loud insistence that begged her consolation.
All he could do was reach for her.
