When frost giants attack the city of Bryn Shander in 1491, Ed and Holga make the decision to take Kira and make the perilous journey south to Mornbryn's Shield, where they hope to start a new life away from the unpredictable Ten Towns and the memory of Edgin's wife. Along the way they meet a paladin of Ilmater who agrees to escort them as far as Mirabar, setting off a chain of events that will have Ed questioning his beliefs, evaluating his relationship with his daughter, and perhaps even let him heal enough to finally find happiness again.

Summary
Joel wakes to the faraway sound of several people screaming, and his ears automatically strain to siphon Ellie’s voice out of the cacophony. Ever since Colorado, that instinct has been making its way back into his repertoire, leftover from those years of Sarah’s childhood when silence meant trouble.
“Motherfucker,” someone cries, and Joel would know his kid’s voice anywhere, even with what must be at least a floor between them.
He’s on his feet and careening down the hallway in an instant, memories crashing into him as he tries to piece together why the fuck he’s in an empty hospital. There’s a clatter above him, and then a gunshot rings out through the hospital, and he’s tripping over himself on the way to the stairs.
Blinking away memories of Sarah in his arms, he throws himself through the doors to the stairway and takes them two at a time, following the sound of chaos onto the surgical floor. He chokes on the realization that Ellie’s in an operating room.

“Twenty minutes if I pretend traffic laws don’t exist.” Leon was up and moving, putting the call on speaker and dropping the phone on his bed. Shaving would have to wait, but he needed to get dressed in something more than boxer-briefs and an old STRATCOM shirt. His go-bag was still by the door, so he only had to grab a few things… “You clear this with the brass?”
“Talked to Director Savage myself. Have to say, he’s a lot more personable than Simmons.” Chris with the understatement of the year, surrounded by humor that faded quickly. “Listen, the chopper that’s picking you up will have Piers on it–he’ll explain everything. Or, well, what we know so far. But the short version is, I need you to play bodyguard for a while. Could be a few days, or it might be longer than that. I’ll update you as soon as I can.”
Bodyguard, huh? That had the potential to be easier than his last mission was, or a whole fuck of a lot harder.

The bus starts rolling from the station, the noise level cresting briefly and then dropping back down again, and Joel finally opens his eyes, chancing a glance over at the person sitting next to him.

Summary
Joel turns and peers cautiously down the alley. In the fading light he can make out three figures, teenage boys if he had to guess, in a semi-circle around a kneeling figure. Their head turns and Joel catches sight of a brown ponytail between the boys’ legs, a flash of a knife gripped in a hand.
One of them steps forward and kicks her in the shoulder, sending her sprawling backwards. She scrambles back to her feet, knife outstretched in front of her, teeth bared. If she wasn’t so goddamn small, Joel would think she was more than capable of handling herself against these guys, but they’ve each got probably half a foot and fifty pounds on her, and he finds himself walking closer.

The butterfly leads him on a path that makes him smile, weaving around trees and clambering up rocks the way he did when Sarah was small enough that some of her climbs left her stranded. It’s utterly senseless, the same route Sarah would pick when he wasn’t chiding her to stay on the trails. The butterfly never leaves his sight, like it’s waiting for him to catch up, and he can almost hear Sarah calling “C’mon slowpoke!” through the trees as he follows the little yellow dot. His throat feels tight, but he feels lighter than he has in years, playing this stupid game.
He snorts when the butterfly disappears around a tree. Sarah used to love darting around trees to jump out at him, so he jogs to catch up, and in his stupid whimsy, swings himself around-
