Summary
“Did you dream?” Lilya asks. It is a quiet question. Even more jarring is how Lilya has never been quiet a day in her life— she was born screaming to the skies. Born to race along the setting sun. In the back of her mind, some half-forgotten voice resurfaces: eat my exhaust! “In the treatment. Did you?”
She should say something, Vertin thinks. Swallows. Wills the words forward, but they get stuck just below her throat and form a hard clot, tangled and spiky. She has never been good with words. Never seems to have the right ones, not when it matters, not when it’s too late, and she can’t find the right words now.
A dream. How strange— she has only ever dreamt when it is a nightmare.

His voice was an echo, and was not made up of words so much as thoughts and ideas now that he had no body to mould his sounds into more distinct shapes. “You would have loved him.” Darling laid her head across his lap, her ears slapping gently against his forearm. Eurylochus gave them a good scratch. “I did,” he said. “Everyone loved him.”
