Summary
In high school, Han Ho-yeol lost his voice for the first time, as if he could no longer find the language to accurately express his inner self. Silence became his safe house. His mother took him to a doctor who asked him to write down what was wrong, but all he could give back was a blank page.
Many years passed. Waking up in a military hospital, Ho-yeol lost his voice again. The doctor asked him where it hurt; he just shook his head. Nowhere hurt, yet everywhere did. He couldn't say it, and it was useless even if he could. He was hospitalized, undergoing all sorts of examinations. In the long, blank stretches of time, the past replayed itself in his mind, unbidden—a past about which he had never told Jun-ho, about his sudden silence and the things that lay behind it. The things that cannot be described by any language are often the heaviest.
