There's no denying it. It's an unmistakable moan. A throaty, broken sound that Miles has definitely never heard Alex make before, because he'd know if he had. It’s similar to the sound Alex sometimes makes when he’s performing with the Monkeys, at the start of a bridge or a solo, but it’s also not like that at all. Because where those moans are deliberate and showy, this one is clearly accidental, and therefore much, much more intimate.
They both freeze, Miles's hand still gripping Alex’s hair while the ghost of the moan continues to echo inescapably through the room.

Miles got completely lost in his voice. There was a faraway quality to it, like he belonged somewhere else entirely, but somehow had decided to grace them with his presence and Miles felt blessed to be near him if even for a short while. The subtle elegance hidden in his slender figure, the mannerisms of his fingers wrapped around the corners of his notebook. His words were spoken softly, quietly, but without any hesitation or faltering.
Alex is an elusive poet, who has a way with words and Miles is a bartender, who is completely mesmerized.

Miles Kane: the only disruption in Alex's white picket fence life. He'd moved to a very small town and gotten a job at the elementary school, hoping to work on his book while he lived a calm and sunny life. When he'd first settled into town, he'd been pleased to find that there were little to no single women his age that he might find distracting from his life of zen. That was, of course, before he met the lanky sixth grade teacher.
That was a little over a year ago. It had been an uphill trudge since then. Or downhill stumble, rather, since Alex somehow became a bumbling idiot every time the other man was around - rightly so, too, as Miles wasn't too subtle about his elongated gazes and 'under the cover' romantic quips he tossed around.

Summary
Miles hadn’t expected to see Alex here, is the line he’s telling himself. He’s attending a party at the house of a mutual friend, but he hadn’t thought that Alex would turn up, as he usually didn’t. It might be a little more convincing if he wasn’t wearing a silk shirt that draped over his shoulders in a way he knew Alex loved and if he hadn’t doused it in the cologne that Alex inhaled deeply and unconsciously whenever he caught its scent. But Miles hadn’t known for sure that Alex was in the country, so he can’t be held accountable for these choices.
