“There’s my favorite bloodsucker.” Stephanie’s smile was blinding when he swung the front door open.
“I’m your only bloodsucker,” Tim replied flatly. He waved at Stephanie’s mom as she drove past the large fountain in front of the manor and headed back down the drive before ushering Stephanie in and shutting the door.
“How are the new pinchers coming in?” she asked. Then, without giving him the chance to actually respond, grabbed his face in both her hands and dug her thumbs into the hinges of his jaw prompting it to drop open. “Awww, they’re so cute! And tiny! Are you sure you’re going to be able to feed with those little things?”
Tim batted her hands away, huffing. “Yes.”

That tiny fourth turtle with the blue-patterned shell and bright gold eyes—the first one to smile and reach up to be held, the one that had fallen during their frantic escape and was left behind in the crush of the destroyed lab—the one the little shrine in Yoshi’s room belonged to, even though he didn’t have a proper photo, or a decent idea of what Blue would have looked like grown into personhood—the one that a corner of Yoshi’s heart belonged to, even now, even still—
“He’s alive, my darling,” his mother told him. In the dream, she sounded so certain. The clan symbol on her obi seemed to glow, a warm, shining thing that cast all darkness and doubt aside. “Go and bring my grandbaby home, okay?”
Or: Leonardo grew up in a Hidden City orphanage, but he had a home waiting for him all along.
