Gai had done something similar, sure... But he'd never actually guessed that it was Kakashi.
And he'd discarded any suspicion over it that he might've had, almost immediately.
So, why was it that Umino Iruka, of all people, had been the only one to figure it out?

Those were the first things to register in my waking brain.

What could only be fingertips, were caressing, stroking, and tracing the features of my face.
Fingertips, yes.
Slowly tracking the length of my nose, traversing the line of my cheekbone, following the curve of my jaw, and flowing over the bow of my lips.
Gliding ever so tenderly over the scar that cut across my nose.
My heart stuttered.
It's early, still.
The birdsong in the trees outside my windows, and the brightness behind my eyelids tell me so.
Everything was as it should be, but with one small exception...
I have no idea who is touching me.
I have no lover.

Why doesn't he mind that Hawks is there?
Why does he keep going? His mission was over... Everything he'd ever wanted has come and gone. So why does he remain?
But maybe that was the crux of the matter...
Maybe it hadn't been everything?
Maybe there was one last thing...
Maybe there was one thing that he's needed, even if he'd never known it.
Maybe wants and needs aren't the same at all.
Maybe his mother was right... maybe he would find love, too?
And wouldn't that be something?
