Summary
After more than a year on furlough, Lieutenant Edward Little gathers all his courage and pays a visit to a scandalously specialized bawdy house that has intrigued him since he first heard of it. There, he meets Mr. Thomas Jopson, a former Naval steward who has taken on alternate employment as a means to stay near his ailing mother.
Edward quickly falls in love with the remarkable man, but is faced with the uncomfortable question: can somebody who makes love for a living ever really love him back? And even if he does, can there ever be a future for them?

Summary
Red Jumper scans a bag of grated cheddar, waits just long enough for the total to pop up on the screen, and then promptly tears the bag open, reaches in, and stuffs a handful of cheese into his mouth with all the gusto of a starved gerbil.
Ned’s aware he’s staring.
There are a lot of things you get used to, working the closing shift at your local Tesco's. Watching a man devour shredded cheese at the self-checkout, as Ned Little discovers, is not one of them.

Summary
“A temptation, sir?” Jopson asks, voice low and pensive. Edward closes his own eyes to the sound and wills Jopson away: to go find Peddie or perhaps MacDonald, even Irving or Hodgson. Anywhere but here where his scent tempts Edward's nostrils like the finest pipesmoke, where he can very nearly feel the heat radiating from Jopson's body like the memory of the sun beating down upon the cobbled streets of Valletta.
“Am I a temptation to you, Lieutenant Little?”
Edward Little unexpectedly goes into rut. Fortunately, Thomas Jopson is at hand to help.
