    30 minutes, an emotional phone call to Tommy’s parents, and some tears that were totally not shed, later- Tommy is walking out of Techno’s office, a signed hall pass clutched tightly in his right hand.

    As he makes his way back up the stairs to his now fifth-period class, he feels the signature annoying itch, on his left arm this time, that always accompanies a soulmate marking their body. Rolling his eyes exasperatedly, he pulls up his sleeve, expecting to find Phil’s newest lesson plan or some of Wilbur’s dumb doodles, but instead, he gets a nice surprise.

    Right there, in Technoblade’s neat scrawl: “care abt u, kiddo. good luck”

    Already, he can see Wilbur start to draw little, stupid, hearts around it. Phil scribbles in question marks, and writes a little ‘text me’, and underlines it twice, and Tommy knows he cares as well.

    He wipes his watery eyes, smiles, and then continues his slow ascent up the flight of stairs to his next class period.

    Wilbur’s embrace was warm. It was safe. It was protection. Tommy felt as though nobody could touch him, nobody could hurt him, there in Wilbur’s arms.

    “We won’t let anyone hurt you again,” Wilbur promised, his voice a soft rumble, “I promise.”

     

    OR, Tommy is pushed off a cliff into the ocean as a sacrifice to the sea god, but instead, Tommy turns into a mermaid and gets found family.
