“What’s she like?”
“She looks a lot like Mel.”
“Oh, really? That’s — well, Mel is beautiful. She’s — yeah,” he stutters. “So, that’s good then.”
He nods a few times, trying to convince himself this really is good, and a not fucking sign from the universe that everything leads back to Mel for him.
“I just have to say it. Frank, she is Mel.”
“Fuck,” he says and walks up the steps to window to see for himself.
She’s there, sitting at a table by herself and looking like a dream with her hair loose and an oversized sweater on that he has the urge to put his hands under.
“Fuck,” he repeats. “How the fuck did this happen?”

“I dare you to say 'kind' one more time.” He shakes his head. “No, I am. I swear, this is more selfish than it probably should be. Listen, I, uh, I know this is a lot and we can be pretty intense, but if you need people, Abby and I, we'd really like to be your people.”

Summary
"I want to see."
"Wh-what?" Mel blinked at his sudden words. Langdon tilted his head down toward her and held the bear out. Mel felt dizzy with déjà vu as he gestured for her to take it.
"I want to see what you did to him. Show me."
Mel took the bear slowly, her mind whirling too fast to keep up with. She had never felt so confused and so turned on in all her life. "You want me to…?"
"Yes." Langdon's gaze was dark and cool as he regarded her, but she didn't miss the rapid rise and fall of his chest as he spoke. "Show me exactly what you did last night to the prize I won you."
The day after Langdon wins Mel a teddy bear at the county fair, which she then used for… less-than-innocent purposes, she is determined to leave her crush on the married man behind. But when Mel accidentally sends him an indecent picture involving the bear, she realizes this crush might not be one she can ever recover from.

Summary
They were friends.
And yeah, maybe the ring on his finger sort of burned when he looked at her sometimes, even though it was just for show, now.
It was just easier to let her keep thinking he was still married to Abby. Safer.
It raised less eyebrows about the nature of their friendship when the ring stayed on while he was at work, the weight on his finger reminding him not to say or do anything stupid.
It also made it a little less creepy when the pet names started slipping out.

And when his reassuring, steady arm hovered behind her lower back, not even touching her, as he passed behind her, burned up her back and into her chest where the phantom sensation teased at her nipples and into her core, sending a shiver down her back, she well and truly knew that she was screwed.
Or; Frank Langdon catches a glimpse of something more intimate underneath Mel’s clothing, and the rest is history.

“I like science. More bio than anything, but chem can be cool, too.”
Frank’s eyes brightened, and his whole body turned towards her. “Shit, me too! I’m starting to look into options for undergrad, and I’m definitely thinking pre-med. Are you?”
It baffled her how he could sit there in a room that wasn't his, covered in marks of violence, and still think about the future. For her, the future had slipped out of her grasp the night she and Becca had shown up here.
“I…was. Yeah. I thought it would be cool to be a doctor.”
“Not anymore?”
“No, it would still be cool, but..” she gestured around her, because she was standing in a room that wasn’t hers, in a house that wasn’t hers. Always out of place, since that night.
Frank huffed. “Can’t let this stuff take you out of the running. My dad gave it a red hot go, sure, but now he’s gonna be locked up for ages, and I’m still gonna be a fucking doctor. Joke's on him.”
Or: Mel and Frank meet fifteen years before the Pitt, in a group home, during the worst year of both their lives. This is proof that they fall in love in every timeline.

Summary
“Frank Langdon, are you cheating on your wife with the new R2?” Robby asked him bluntly, not even trying to disguise the disappointment in his eyes.
Then Frank did the absolute last thing he should have done. He burst into laughter.
“Is this funny to you?” Robby almost growled, “you have a wife and kids at home! A wife who delayed medical school to have your kids and you go and cheat on her with someone you knew from medical school? That’s fucked up, man.”
Frank stood ramrod straight and shook his head furiously. “No, no, no!” he protested. “That is one hundred percent not what is happening. Mel is my wife. My only wife,” he clarified unnecessarily.
Robby’s anger simmered, his eyes now furrowed in confusion. “I thought your wife’s name was Abby?”
Frank’s face filled with horror. His face turning pale. It was then he realised that he’d fucked up. He fucked up so bad. Like a generationally bad fuck up.
__AKA the one where a family inside joke leads to the entire Pitt Crew thinking that Frank is cheating on his wife with, well…his actual wife.

Summary
“I could show it to you,” she said flatly, body as still as a statue. No-one else around, he tried to catch her eyes, but her eyes didn’t shift from their stiff glare at the locker. He licked his lips, mouth suddenly dry.
“I could show you the costume, I mean,” she said, as if he’d needed the elaboration. It was then that Mel turned her head ever so slightly, to the side and tilted back to look into his face. Her eyes were wide, darker than their usual hazel and full of a need Frank was afraid to name."Mel King used to go to Ren Faires. She still has the costume and when she shows it to Frank Langdon, it puts him in some type of mood.

Summary
Mel King was a creature of habit.
There was a specific sort of choreography to her life beyond the chaos of the Emergency Department. A carefully controlled routine, a color-coded calendar, a rigid set of rituals that kept her grounded enough to keep showing up day after day, to keep on doing the work that was required of her to save lives.
Everything was going fine for Mel. Her personal life was predictable, unexciting, and perfectly fulfilling, thank you very much.
Enter Frank Langdon, agent of chaos.
