Sonic's life had felt ordinary lately, but it began to change one holiday morning when someone he never expected knocked on his door.
His life changed since that day. After the change, he had to try to adjust to it, something that made him feel like he didn't belong at his house. Until, finally, he slowly came to accept the change and perhaps ultimately rejected it if that were taken away from him.[AKA What if Shadow suddenly befriended with Tails, and that makes Sonic terribly pissed, like his brother got snatched from him.]

Summary
While out on a run, Sonic finds Shadow badly injured and unconscious in a grass field. Overwhelmed by emotion, Sonic kisses Shadow while he sleeps, then runs home, ashamed and confused. For days, Sonic avoids Shadow, unsure how to face him after what he did. Eventually, Shadow finds him and confronts him about the kiss. Sonic denies it at first, but the truth hangs between them, unspoken but deeply felt.

Summary
It’d been a month or so since…everything happened—and Sonic’s nightmares had shown no sign of granting him mercy. Sometimes he would jerk awake in the middle of the night in a cold sweat, gasping for breath; other times, his eyes would snap open and he would be gripping his blankets with trembling hands, as if his body wanted to reach out and save Shadow.
Today, he woke up feeling completely numb all over, his muzzle drenched from fresh tears. The morning sun was just barely rising over the horizon, streaks of light peeking through the circular window on the ceiling and bathing the floorboards of the attic in warm orange.
How cruel was it that mornings were so beautiful when Shadow couldn’t be here to see it?
OR: Shadow isn’t dead. Sonic just doesn’t realize it until he catches Shadow on the Wachowski’s security camera, sneaking into the house night after night.

Summary
Eggman has known this kid for just over a year. Hardly knows him really. All he does know is this kid is a real pain in his side. And here he was, offering the hedgehog a place to stay over the cold winter months.
Was he going soft?
No. It's just temporary. It means nothing. The rodent is only to stay until the snow starts to melt. That's it. It. Means. Nothing.
