Inside, Steve Harrington sits curled in his bed, knees drawn to his chest, wearing Eddie’s battle vest like a sacred relic. The denim fits him wrong—too tight in the shoulders, loose where Eddie’s ribs had been—but his fingers clutch the fabric like it might dissolve if he lets go. A plush bat, cheap carnival prize from some forgotten summer, is crushed against his sternum, its felt wings fraying under the pressure of his grip. His face is turned toward the window, wet with tears that catch the dim light, and Eddie’s unbeating heart lurches in a way that has nothing to do with venom or hive-mind compulsion.

The bonfire convulsed. The flames didn’t just flicker—they arched, twisting into a perfect, grotesque circle, like a gaping mouth frozen mid-scream. Steve’s stomach plummeted. He knew that shape.
