At those words, Matt froze, making no move to take the sheet from him by any means and trying his absolute best to think of an excuse so he wouldn’t have to. He even considered knocking over L’s teacup as a distraction, although it was standing too far away from him to be able to do so in an inconspicuous manner. A deliberate choice, no doubt.
‘That wouldn’t be fair towards the others though, would it?’ he tried instead.
‘No, I suppose not.’ L replied after a while, before taking back the sheet and observing him once more. It made Matt especially grateful for his goggles, which at least hid him from view somewhat.
‘I heard you’re rather close to Mello.’ L thankfully changed the subject for him. Even if Matt knew he wouldn’t be glad for very long, considering L undoubtedly had ulterior motives, but still. ‘Is he a good friend to you?’
What kind of question even was that?

Or: L knows Matt is smarter than he lets on, but Matt isn't particularly interested in becoming L's successor. Mello's happiness may or may not have something to do with that.
