Summary
Don’t say anything about missing Eddie, he thinks as he chops veggies to hide in Bobby’s ragu sauce. Don’t say anything about wanting him and Christopher back. Don’t say anything about El Paso, or facetime calls, or any feelings.
“I think Eddie and Chris are haunting my kitchen,” Buck blurts out.
In 2025, Evan Buckley is living at 4335 South Bedford Street and missing his Diaz boys. To compensate, he starts cooking.
In 2017, new firefighter academy recruit Eddie Diaz is starting to believe his son when he says that their new house comes with its very own kitchen ghost.
In every time, there is a kitchen, food for three, and love, and love, and love.

Summary
"Buck," Eddie repeats slowly, "I need you to breathe for me."
"I have a daughter," Buck says, hands shaking. "I — I have to go to Hershey and —"
"Okay," Eddie tells him, so calm when Buck is losing it. "Hey, look at me. It's going to be fine. I'll call Chim."
"I'll get your plane tickets," Christopher decides, already up on his feet, ready to go to his room.
Or fourteen years ago, Buck had a daughter with his ex-girlfriend. After she passes away, he learns about her existence, and learns to deal with what being a teenager's father means. Luckily for him, he can count on his 118 family.

Summary
“Y’know, when I was a kid, I had this firetruck toy. It made the wee-woo sound, and it had lights that flashed.” He smiled, remembering how much he’d loved that thing. "One day it stopped working, and I was so upset. I brought it to my dad, and pressed the buttons over and over, and it didn’t shine the lights, or make any noise. He said it was broken, and I cried for days. Maddie had to sleep in my room with me so I would get a wink at night. Later, when I was packing up to leave, I found that firetruck, and stuck to the bottom, in my dad’s writing, was a post-it-note. It said: Margaret, don’t replace the batteries on this. It’s annoying.”

Summary
Buck’s phone starts ringing in his pocket. He sighs and checks the caller ID, staring in confusion at the unfamiliar number.
“Uh, hello?”
“Hello there, is this Evan Buckley?” A woman’s voice is heard through the phone.
“May I ask who’s calling?”
“My name is Hope Williams, from Child Protective Services. I was wondering if you had a moment to schedule a meeting on behalf of Charlotte Davis?”
“I-I’m sorry, I think you must have called the wrong Evan Buckley. Who is Charlotte Davis?”
Or
Buck finds out he has a 7-year-old daughter. Buck finds out a lot of stuff, actually.

The last call of a normal shift changes everything.
When Evan Buckley opens his home to a seven-year-old foster child who has learned that silence is safer than asking for anything, he doesn’t try to save her. He learns how to kneel. How to wait. How to be quiet.
Love comes slowly — in shared space, in steady presence, in the choice to stay even when nothing is promised.
