When he reaches Alex, he crouches down to his knees, and he focuses on the way the blades just barely cut into the skin on the back of his thighs through his pants rather than the shaking of his hands at his sides.
“Alex?” Henry says, leaning his head down so he can maybe get in eye level with Alex, but Alex keeps his eyes firmly shut and angled down towards the ground, his curls plastered across his sweaty forehead, and it takes everything in Henry not to gently move the hair from his face.
“Alex, hey it’s – it’s Henry. Henry Fox?” Henry tries, this time a little louder, and he cringes at the awkwardness of it all. He thinks Alex must hear him though if the slight wince that rolls through Alex’s body is to go off anything.
Or: Hockey player Alex who gets injured and is back on the ice for the first time since said injury and isn't dealing with it well mentally, and figure skater Henry who comes into the rink one morning and finds Alex keeled over on the ice having a panic attack

I took a step forward, a minimal movement, weighed down by the infuriating caution of someone trapped between two equally wrong choices.
I wanted him to take it back, to say it was a provocation, a bad joke, or even a slip. Anything but… the truth.
Part of me already knew the undeniable weight of his confession.
Part of me knew exactly what to do with it, if I were someone else.
“You can’t do this to me,” I blurted out instead. “How am I supposed to walk down that aisle now? To go through with this wedding, knowing that…”
Knowing that I could have it all?
But what do you do when ‘everything’ is the cruelest uncertainty in the world, while ‘not everything’ remains so familiar, so steady?
The discomfort of stability was, at least, predictable.

And Henry does agree that it'll probably be beneficial for him. He's tired of feeling stuck inside his self-made prison and frustrated that running halfway across the world from his suffocating family didn't magically remove all of his woes.
So he'll run. He'll give it his best shot.
Who knows? Maybe it'll be an enlightening experience.
But Henry doubts it. By the look on his face, David is feeling rather pessimistic about it, too.
But Henry promised he would try, and he keeps his promises. Putting one foot in front of the other when each step feels heavy is something he's already good at.
