Astron felt their breath hitch even as they let their feet carry them to the top of the stairs and look down into that void of false stars. “Is this… Is this what you really want?” A hum was heard behind them, “It is. After everything they have done to us. After they took Lux from us. This is what I want.”
Astron shut their eyes and fell forward, “Then I trust you, Mom.” The portal hummed as their being was accepted into its embrace.

He'll show them just why he hid the portal.or or, Rat destroys the last End Portal with a machine after he and Astron escape through it. A brilliant light engulfed Arathain’s vision as those golden chains tightened around his body. Rat’s shocked face quickly turned to terror as he used his trident to flee the impending disaster. The rat had been warned by him, he hoped that they were able to escape the blast radius.
His daughter cried out for him, he could see her being dragged back by Diansu. His greatest regret was having Lux watch his demise. At least Diansu and Will would be there for her.
As the heat became excruciating and boiled his blood, he began to laugh. It was manic and pained. This really wasn’t where he expected to be taken out. He thought he would at least get a few more decades.

This shield has always been reliable. When the world is too loud, to understand it is to make it quiet. When people are threatening, confusing, contradictory, to study them is to render them unsurprising and therefore harmless.
Behind his shield, Ratio has always been alone. To be alone is to be safe. Comfortable. Undisturbed.

Ratio, safe and sound behind his shield, has spent his life watching the shieldless fools fall.
Now, Aventurine has fallen and Ratio yearns for the cocoon of security which would allow him to avert his eyes from the sight.

Summary
The image of Louis seeing him off as he was dragged into the depths of hell is burned into Owen's mind. That alone - the knowledge that he's broken the heart of the only person he's met that was worth a damn - must have been considered enough of a torment that he got to skip the whole "tortured in the eternal inferno" thing.
Owen wakes up to find Oakhurst has been reset to the day he initially woke up from his nap. No blood has been spilled, no fires have been started - everyone is fresh on the land and completely unawares of the horrors that await them. To rub even more salt in the wound, Abolish's cure for vampirism followed him, and he was once more forced to live in his accursed human body.
Well, not that Owen cares, really. He's done his time. He's played this game once, and he couldn't even say he walked out satisfied. Let the humans and the vampires fight and kill each other - he's perfectly content to live out of sight and out of mind of those wretched people. He doesn't need their company, and it's not like anyone will notice or care if he's absent, besides.
