Sherlock's brother Mycroft is puzzled over a seemingly meaningless lie, a civil servant makes the mistake of drawing the detective's attentions, a case that stretched from Devonshire to Egypt, the strange and rather humorous Hammerford Inheritance, a businesswoman tries to ruin a rival, Sherlock's friend LeStrade has an annoying temporary sidekick, and the burly detective is gulled over a dead cat (or not). The Spencer John Gang is not what it seems, fatally for someone, and there is no mess that the Metropolitan Police Service cannot make worse. There is a horrible case in west Gloucestershire and a strange death in the Essex marches that has a supernatural element to it.

And so, the end is near, but the final curtain is not quite within reach as Sherlock and John encounter a brave Lion, another deceptive photograph, a false front, a fatal fertility stone, an untimely alibi, and some men who are might indeed 'make the cut. Sherlock is arguably less than truthful and worst of all for John handsome young men seem to abound, with yet another leering young Cornishman, a young knight with a spear, and a handsome rugby-player! But they come through and make it to their Sussex hideaway (and all that sex!).

A short but important period in the careers of the dynamic duo as having averted the end of the world (as you do), Sherlock recovers from his carelessness in hurting his beloved John and encounters questionable bequests, crooked gamblers, helpful saints, unhelpful sailors, prejudiced professors, harassed hairdressers, jumping journalists, turbulent priests, unusual cab-drivers, Spartan behemoths and an attempt to destroy a close friend. Plus there is one of the two most famous previously unpublished cases, the Abernetty Affair or why the parsley sank so low into the butter. And then a kind act of the great detective repays itself with a chance to truly make his beloved a very happy man in the wee small hours of the morning (no, not that way!).

But then some dodgy furniture leads to another nearly fatal encounter down in Kent, and this time John is really angry with his friend. Things do not look good.

1898-1899. Sherlock and John have to hasten back to England in order to help a relative with a decidedly unusual last request. Then there are dog-poisoners, a DIY disaster-maker, a market-trader, an evil stepmother, a gold statue, a fraudulent forger, birthday boys, ugly dates, insane Iberians and loose Australians, plus some dancing men who someone wants to stop dancing – permanently! Sherlock also finds time to help out John's least favourite Cornish ex-fisherman of all time, as well as solving the disappearance of Mr. James Phillimore (along with his umbrella) and the reappearance of some rather unfortunate truths from over a millennium ago. But some dodgy furniture leads to another nearly fatal encounter down in Kent, and this time John is really angry with his friend. Things do not look good.

1897-1898. Sherlock slowly recovers from his disgraced ex-brother Torver's vicious attack, although he has 'help' courtesy of an Arthurian knight. He also has a rare case with one of the Baker Street Irregulars involving theft and mathematics. There is a gruesome murder by someone who thinks they are bound to get away with it (they are wrong), a handyman who is rather too handy, some cartoon capers, and a stolen painting that is not stolen. Then it is onto monks, monkeying around, shootings and sovereigns, before karma once again shows that she has a warped sense of humour.

Some calm between the still occasional storms as Sherlock and John face mass murder, buildings that fall down too soon, scheming thieves, cuddly toys, capricious clansmen, tired explorers, avenging angels and a murder without an evil stepmother. Plus a man who travels eight thousand miles just to make a certain lounge-lizard get the point (yes, John would have gone even further!). Then there are fatally misunderstood warnings, deadly church bells, modern technology going horribly wrong, false alibis, rampant classism, drugged youths and, most incredibly of all, a popular politician! (sic). But through it all though Sherlock and John have each other – until a new and deadly danger now looms, one rather too close to home.

The dynamic duo are back hunting together and facing a whole set of new challenges including a man who may or may not have vanished, a relative with indigestion, a friend who might perhaps been more careful when he gets what he asked for, three cases with links to a famous authoress, a friend whose neighbour has been murdered, some Scottish separatists who are both real and imaginary, a Lemon in Lyme, an arranged marriage, a trip to Paris, and two shocks for Mrs. Hudson! There is also a happy outcome for Sherlock's twin Sherrinford but then the great detective once more puts his life in danger, and John is far from happy.

1889. The Moriarty Years, Part One. An epic struggle between good and evil begins, one that becomes ever more deadly as time goes on. It starts with a romantic interlude albeit one with sombre undertones in Dorsetshire, then a dead body on a train, a room with a view, and John's worst fears being proven right (again). Then there is a possibly too-tidy maid, some practical jokes with evil intent, dead bodies all over the place in Devonshire, dead bodies indirectly causing trouble in Wiltshire, vanishing thumb-prints, a most Faithful policeman, two dogs stolen and two more used for very different purposes. And John gets to visit an area of England that will become very dear to him, and one day far into the future, his home.

1887-1888. The dynamic duo's sole Continental excursion - but boy, do they make up for it even if the trip was forced on poor Watson! There is a dodgy king, a false princess, a corrupt politician and a seemingly dead nobleman, then for the first but not the last time Reichenbach plays a pivotal role in the good doctor's life, followed soon after by a balcony scene, the exchanging of rings, and enough fluff to sink a battleship! Next it is on to some stolen cameos, a vampiric death, a political assassination and a dead man walking before there is a new and rather large man in their lives who wishes them to attempt the impossible – to stop a lady who has set her mind on doing something! And then they are back in Baker Street, together if not yet 'together together' as Sherlock's fearsome mother somehow thinks.

Together (if not 'together together' as Holmes's terrifying mother somehow assumes!) they face a barrage of cases in one of the busiest times in the detective's long career, featuring a blackmailed friend, a not-stolen coronet, bigotry in Baker Street, two cold crimes grown hot again, a threatened inheritance, the scheming Baron Maupertuis, an Irish violinist, a paradol chamber and some deadly clothing. Holmes comes up with arguably the cruellest and most effective anti-crime tactic - thus far - while Watson, not for the last time, is horrendously embarrassed by a photograph.

Then he encounters a worryingly carefree runner, an old friend, some Moscow cows, an English kilt, a possibly vengeful ghost, a Biggar man, an unrepentant truth-teller, some Lowland Highlanders and a Gala gala. He also gets his third big shock in three years, but at least Watson is all right.

Mr. Lucifer Garrick gets what he has always wanted and finds out that clothes HURT, while there is severe embarrassment for Watson when he tries to put one over on his friend only to end up cornered by two muscular and sexually desperate molly-men. Worse, there are – gulp – feelings!

Includes three of the detective's most important cases: the curious matter of the unpowdered nose which was to have severe longer-term consequences for Holmes, the shocking Tankerville Club affair which brings the prodigious Mr. Benjamin Jackson-Giles into his life, and the repellent philanthropist case which introduced Watson to what would turn out to be a key part of his friend's past. Also featuring Lieutenant Frank Columbo, a tawer, the Musgrave Ritual, a matter concerning thirty thousand dead men, hopelessly corrupt policemen, and two cases which shocked Holmes to the core: the forest fire murder and a hysterical woman whose secret he 'uncovers' then wishes fervently that he had not.

We meet Mr. Christopher 'Kristoff' Bond and Mr. Flynn Rider whose relationship gets off to a rough start, and also Tobias Gregson and Gawain LeStrade, two policemen who have a love-hate relationship - except that they show no sign of getting round to the love bit any time this millennium!
