Summary
In 1912, nine years after Holmes' retirement, Watson receives a letter from a certain Miss Penelope Eagleton, whose sister has disappeared after an arranged meeting with the father. The young lady suspects the kidnapper to be the father himself and Holmes, intrigued, accepts the case. Soon after, however, the supposed kidnapper—who turns out to be not quite who the detective expected—reports his daughter as missing himself and it is now up to Holmes to find the missing daughter and to Miss Penelope Eagleton to help her beloved sister.

During the longest night in winter people celebrate "Vlammenfeest"—the feast of flames—to thank Ghezen for the money that allows to keep one's house warm during those cold nights.

Summary
[Set approximately a year and a half after "Crooked Kingdom" and before the Nikolai duology.]
Inej returns to Ketterdam to winter there and she and Kaz attend a charity event organized by the very rich Jellen Radmakker, to obtain information on certain dynamics within the Merchant Council. However, during this little spying job, Inej glimpses someone from her past, which leads the young couple to discuss what it means to be there for each other in a relationship and how they will move forward from here on.

"[...] I missed the Wraith’s excellent sense of hearing during these months," he said, his rasp a bit lower, a bit less secure.
Inej smiled. She was no longer a Dreg, but captain of her namesake ship and she loved it. Part of her, however, would always remain a Crow and she liked to help Kaz with some little jobs here and there when she returned to Ketterdam.
“I missed you too,” she said, extending her hand: an invitation.
Kaz took it in his almost without hesitation and Inej couldn’t help but feel a hint of pride. He intertwined their fingers, letting his thumb caress her sea-wind molden skin.Series

Summary
Initially Inej does not know the precise appearance of the shadows ready to seize him, but she is a spy, collector of secrets, and quickly learns the strengths and weaknesses of the two opponents. Kaz is ambitious, stubborn and above all greedy: once he sets his eyes on the prize, there is almost nothing that can stop him. Almost. The demons he battles are nearly as obstinate as he is, but above all they are difficult to track down, expose and banish; they run deep in his veins.

It will really work between them, Inej knows this, but in that moment she realises for the first time that sooner or later she too will have a story to tell him.(Post "Crooked Kingdom" Kaz and Inej work hard to be together and eventually tell each other their story. Chapter I is about Kaz's trauma, in chapter II it is Inej's turn.)

Summary
The world stopped spinning for a few moments, or maybe whole minutes, Inej was not sure and it did not matter. For a magical while the world shrunk to contain only the honey scent of her Mama’s hair and the reassuring embrace of her Papa.
"May all the Saints be blessed and thanked," sobbed her mother and her father took his eyes off his daughter for just a moment to wipe away the tears from his wife's right cheek. Inej kissed away the tears on the left one.
"The Saints have heard our prayers," her Papa nodded, stroking her hair and looking at her as if he had just found the most precious treasure.

"Not only the Saints have heard your prayers, or mine," she said then and turned around, fearing for a moment that she would find nothing behind her. But Kaz was there: pale and solemn, a few respectful steps away, his gloves back on, yet there with her as she had asked.(You could call this "Chapter 44 B" and "Chapter 44 C" of "The Crooked Kingdom")
