Summary
“Okay,” Garcia gestures to the discarded bottle. “This isn’t your friend.”
“You’re not my friend.”
Garcia pauses, head tilting to the side.
“Is that how this is gonna go?” She crosses her arms and raises her chin. Santos can’t help but duck her head. “Look at me.”

Two months into Frank Langdon’s supposed sabbatical (which, she guesses, it is. She’s one of three people who seem to know where he actually is, and Robby has asked her to keep it that way), Robby pulls her aside and asks, quietly, “How did you know about Langdon?”

Summary
Later, they’ll say it was shock. That’s why she didn’t react. They’ll call it a freak accident—bad luck on a difficult skill. The doctors will exchange careful looks when she asks how soon she can get back on the mat.
She’ll nod along. She’ll play her part.
But she’ll know the truth.
It wasn’t shock. It wasn’t an accident. She had prepared for the pain. She had made the choice.
And when the doctors tell her they can’t be sure if—or when—she’ll return to gymnastics, the breath she lets out isn’t from disappointment.
It’s from relief.—or: Trinity learns how to accept help after by fucking a lot of other stuff up

Summary
It’s one of those things—words, phrases, insults, sometimes even compliments—that sticks with Trinity, even though it shouldn’t. Lodges itself somewhere in the gaps of her ribcage, so with each step she can feel it there under skin, flesh and digging through bone. It grooves into the recesses of her mind, it gets caught in her throat, she can taste those words just on the tip of her tongue and she really fucking hates it.
Much like everything else her stupid brain clings to (it’s a trauma response, she knows that, she’s a doctor, but calling her brain stupid is easier than really facing the problem) it sticks.
Trouble, trouble, trouble.
Or: Trinity Santos learns to let her guard down, just a little bit.

Summary
“So, what’s your plan?” Garcia took another pull on her beer.
“My plan?” Trinity was pretty sure eating a burger didn’t require a plan.
“The flooded apartment. You do have a plan, don’t you?” Garcia asked.
“Uh, yeah. Of course.” Trinity started peeling the label off of her beer bottle. “Of course, I have a plan.” She shrugged. Garcia didn’t need to know that the plan didn’t extend past going back to her car and then, well, she didn’t know.
Garcia looked at her for a long moment before she blinked and took a sip of her beer. “You’re lying.”
“What?” Trinity recoiled. How could Garcia possibly know that?
“I’m going to buy you dinner. We’re going to walk back to the hospital. I’m going to leave you at your car, and then what? What’s the plan after that? Where are you sleeping tonight?”
A pipe bursts in Trinity's apartment. Does she tell anyone? Of course not. Garcia rescues her, but Trinity's trauma makes that difficult.
Also, there was only one bed.

Summary
One of Trinity’s old therapists had spent an entire session explaining the concept of self-sabotage. It hadn’t been a fruitful conversation at the time, considering how she’d still been reeling with grief, unable to see anything in her life that was even worth sabotaging in the first place. But it was something that came back to her more often than she’d like to admit.
The concept had burrowed into her thoughts recently, nagging at her like an itch she couldn’t scratch. Because it was one thing to know on an intellectual level that she was handling herself poorly, but it was another to be able to stop herself. She’d never managed to figure that part out.
It had started a couple weeks ago, after a passing comment she’d overheard while she’d been charting at the hub, a rumor that Langdon would be coming back. A rumor which turned out to very much not be a rumor after all that had sent her into a mild tailspin that she’d tried very hard to ignore. She was restless, jumpy like he was some horror movie villain lurking in the background, waiting to reappear instead of just some guy she’d had a handful of bad interactions with at work.

Looking down at the damp concrete, Dana stifled a sigh. Well, there were definitely worse things to get on her scrubs than rainwater she thought as she sat down next to Santos.
“What’s going on, kid?”
Santos looked away, eyes dropping to her hands as she picked at the skin at the edge of her thumbnail. “Bad case,” she said tonelessly.
“Wanna talk about it?” Dana took a drag of her cigarette, turning her head to breathe the smoke away from Santos.

Summary
Trinity Santos is very good at keeping secrets. Which means she’s very good at knowing who else is keeping secrets.
In retrospect, that might have been why she was able to clock Langdon so easily on her first day. There was something in his eyes.
'Please don’t find out. Please don’t find out. Please don’t find out.'
Amateur. Trinity had years to learn how to hide that look, to perfect the best way to hide everything behind sharp eyes and sarcastic remarks. Dr. Langdon didn’t have such luck. A beginner.
Just like the girl laying on the hospital bed, hands on her stomach, leaving out a whimper or two as Santos, automatically and barely even there, presents the case. She looks at the teenager and sees it too.
'Please don’t find out. Please don’t find out. Please don’t find out.'

Summary
Santos smiles. “You know, I meant what I said.”
“What’s that?”
Santos turns her head to meet Garcia’s heavy gaze. “I think you might kill me.”
Garcia glances down to her jaw and then to her lips before coming back to Santos’ eyes.
“I think you might kill me first."A simple apology leads to mind-blowing sex as Santos and Garcia become obsessed with getting each other off. Part smut, part character study, part Santos growing, and healing, and experiencing all the pain and joy of letting herself be known.

He is handling it. Right up until he and, by proxy, the rest of the ER are taken hostage by a patient.
Oh well, guess there's no time like the present to confront all of his issues head on, right?

“I noticed you don’t have an emergency contact on file.”
“Mom’s useless,” Santos mutters. “Dad’s not around.”
“Friends?” Garcia asks expectantly after a beat.
Santos rolls her functioning eye and tries once again to swallow without anything hurting. “Historically—bad at those,” she croaks.
“Color me surprised,” Garcia deadpans, then types again and does a few clicks. “Well, I already have this week off for a vacation that got cancelled last-minute, so you can stay with me for your initial recovery.”
She says it all without batting an eyelash, and Santos tries to remember whether concussions can cause hallucinations.
