“I know you.” She says clearly.
He doesn’t respond.
“I’m serious. I think… I think I've known you before.” He looks at her and sees her face scrunched up in concentration, perhaps trying to recall a memory or a sensation, maybe even the same memories that haunt him. If he needed any more confirmation of the inevitability of their circumstances, he now had it.
He looks up at the stars, muddled from the light pollution all around them, yet still so brilliant to his keen eyes. The same stars he’s looked up at since he was only a pup.
“Did you know me?” He looks at her again, seeing her earnest, open expression. Seeing those same stars reflected in her eyes. Something in his chest stirs.
“Of course.”
