Louis stays behind, studying psychology, pretending that the absence of one best friend doesn’t rearrange the flat’s gravity.
When Harry finally returns, everything feels almost the same. The light, the noise, the boys, the unspoken thing between them. Until it isn’t. Until there’s distance where laughter used to live and a thousand words they never learned how to say.

Louis had agreed, thankfully, but not before he'd gone back and forth in Harry's messages for a few days. One second, he didn't think he'd be able to spend that much time away from New York because of his book and the next, it was that his mom might have plans — anything to grasp onto. Harry doesn't blame him; a vacation with Louis isn't ideal for him post breakup, either.

“Oh, hi Niall,” Harry chirped. “I didn’t know I would be living with three people.” Harry was on his way forward, but Niall blocked the door, stopping him.
“What are you on about?” Niall asked and Harry froze. His cheeks heated, his heart started pounding harder in his chest.
“I’m the new roommate,” Harry said, shyly, letting go of one of his suitcases to dig out his phone. “I talked to Zayn and Louis,” Harry said, showing Niall the texts and watched as his face turned from confusion to pure anger. Eyes dark, jaw clenched.
