    Summary

Post-season 1 of Moon Knight, it's a new age of the world, where the cosmic power balances are shifting. Steven, Marc, and Jake start meeting Avengers, making tentative connections and allies with the wider MCU, all while working on internal team-building efforts with each other.

Roughly follows the canon timeline in Phase Four, with some events rearranged so our guys can meet the characters before their movies happen. Gets more canon-divergent in Phase Five, as the little changes add up.

I love the way the author writes the headmates. The stories are both entertaining and enlightening. These stories inspired me to go back and rewatch the Marvel streaming series. It's a whole different experience once you know what's happening. So many new details to see! Then I went an subscribed to Marvel Unlimited so I could read the comics.

    Summary

"Steven Grant Rogers," a voice said from somewhere near Steve's front door. "Professional inker. Maybe you'd like to explain why you're leaving us messages about our good friend Bucky?"

The redhead currently pinning Steve to the couch said, "Really?"

"Alright, her good friend Bucky. My tolerated friend Bucky."

"My phone's on the table," Steve ground out. "Grab it, have a look at the last picture."

The guy grabbed it, and his obvious double-take would have been funny if Steve wasn't being crushed into his couch. He held it out and the redhead peered at it. "It could be fake."

"That's right," Steve said, digging down for all the sarcasm that existed in his skinny body. "I scribbled all over my own thighs and took a photo so I could lure a pair of hostile weirdos to my apartment. That's how I enjoy spending my time."

"You know what this means, right?" the guy said, sounding deeply bemused. "Bucky has a soulmate."

I don't normally read soulmate fics but this is a different take on the trope with slow revelations and lots of action. I love it! Illustrations and art critiques are additional treats.

    Summary

“Bucky’s not my—“ my anything, Sarah almost said, before she swallowed the automatic denial.

Dina was going to be here until the new year. Sarah knew from experience that her mother-in-law could fit a lot of introductions, and blind dates masquerading as friendly dinners, and just plain set-ups into those weeks. The woman was more relentless than a Match.com subscription. But here was an easy way to avoid all of that, and all it would take was one harmless little white lie.

“It’s new and we haven’t really put a label on it yet,” she said. “Just seeing how things go, taking it slow, you know?”

Bucky and Sarah have busy holiday seasons ahead of them: Bucky's reconnecting with his family, and Sarah's former mother-in-law has come to stay for her annual holiday visit. As if that wasn't enough, Sarah and Bucky both have to deal with well-meaning relatives trying to set them up with other people when that's the last thing they want or need. There's a simple solution to that problem though, in the form of one little white lie to get them through the stressful holiday season. They can claim to be dating each other.

    Summary

The garland strung along the upper railings tells him where he is (the fucking Kursk base), who is working on him (fucking HYDRA), what they’re putting him through (so fucking cold), and what’s expected of him (…he tends to draw a blank here; there’s only so much garland can help with).

The birds are the most interesting of the objects tucked into the greenery. They shine and glitter in the flickering, buzzing fluorescent lights, and sometimes say hello. Not at all like real birds, though he can’t recall when he last had an opportunity to stare incessantly at any actual, non-garland-haunting birds.

He may be going a little stir-crazy.

(Or: *cracks egg into skillet* And this is the Winter Soldier’s mind with absolutely nothing to occupy his thoughts but some bird-themed Christmas decorations along the upper railings. Naturally, everything is horrible.)

Oh wow! This made me think of a long digression in Les Miserables, the book, that describes in exquisite detail the daily minutiae in the life of a cloistered nun. Nothing much happens, but it is mesmerizing. Many years after I read and enjoyed Les Miserables, that is the section that has the most emotional impact for me.

What happens in this story by FlamingoQueen is so subtle you might almost miss it, yet devastating.

The first story in a series. You should read them all.
