It occurs to her, bizarrely detached from the here-and-now, that this might be it. And weirdly, she’s—well, she's okay with that. She doesn’t care how the others measured her time out there. The mistakes they tallied, the way they looked at her like she was an idiot for showing up every night. Steph doesn't really give a fuck about any of that anymore. She knows the good she did, the people she pulled out of alleys, the nights she made it just a little harder for the bad guys to breathe.
God knows it was thankless fucking work, but Steph's always had a thick skull, and right now the scoreboard in her head isn't reading wins and losses. It reads ‘did I make it better?’ And the answer, more often than not, is yes.
Steph is—she's satisfied with that. More than satisfied. If this was the last night she put the mask on, she can go out knowing she didn’t waste her shot.

Jason isn't fire-proof. His armor is durable, but Stephanie doubts it could hold up against a freaking explosion. Her cape, on the other hand, is made for it. With fumbling hands, she tears it off of herself, hood and all, to drape it over Jason like a tablecloth. The big bastard’s feet stick out the ends, and Stephanie wheezes a laugh, folding them so he's laying on his back, legs criss-cross applesauce. It looks ridiculous, and if Stephanie’s heart wasn't trying to climb out of her throat, she might've taken a picture.
Once he's all covered, Steph flops over him as best she can, shimmying under the cape herself. Her bottom half sticks out the side, and she doesn't have the strength to make herself comfortable, cheek pressed into the hard line of his shoulder, but at least she can say she tried.
She isn't surviving this. Blearily, she wonders if Bruce will grieve. If he’ll see her mangled body and remember what she looked like back in the hospital. He might be grateful to her for protecting his son—or hate her for needing his help in the first place. Steph squeezes her eyes shut and refuses to let herself cry.
Ten seconds. At least she's with a friend, this time around.

Over the next two hours, Bruce found six more notes. A little bat-shaped paper declaring way to kick some criminal ass! tucked in with the zip-ties. A little doodle of Batman surrounded by all the Batgirls and Robins with Ohana! written in careful bubble letters hidden in with his protein bars. Hang in there! written under a line of cartoonish bats roosting upside-down. A chibi Batman with his hands on his hips with you ARE the night! You do you, you funky little bat above his head. A scrap of paper with the Batsymbol > Superman’s shield wrapped around his Justice League communicator. And finally, a quick drawing of Steph-as-Batgirl giving Batman a hug.
Bruce never said a word into the comm, but as the night progressed, his reaction to each note was less confusion and more quiet bemusement. He was pretty good at keeping his back to the cameras, but Steph was pretty sure she saw more than one smile.

“Do you work for him?” She asked point-blank.
“Who’s him?” He teased.Steph and Jason catch each other snooping around Black Mask. To avoid getting caught, they employ the oldest trick in the book: Kissing. Once the danger is gone, though, what will they do about the situation?

Steph looked over to the baby, resting her head on Jason's shoulder, and thanked whatever god was listening that their work on the child smuggling case had saved her from a worse fate, but she hoped to God when they found her family it would be one better than she and Jason had ever faced. Steph silently vowed to ensure it herself, if she had to, to offer them whatever help or resources they might need. Too many children had grown up in homes broken for her to be comfortable. That was why she did the work she did. So that no child had to grow up believing there were no heroes, that nobody was coming to save them. Sometimes your hero might just be around the corner - and sometimes, like her and Jason, your hero had to be yourself.

Bruce didn’t bother to answer that question. “I heard about the tunnel collapse.”
Of course he had. “Yeah, that was unfortunate.”
Bruce nodded, looking unhappy. “I see.”
“Yeah,” Steph said, because she had no freaking idea what Bruce expected her to say. Maybe she should downplay the incident? Even though she’d done absolutely everything by the book? “Company was decent at least?”
“I heard.” Definite disapproval there, which… Steph thought Bruce was over the whole pushing-Jason-away-for-his-own-good thing? Granted, she tried her best to stay out of Bruce’s family life, given that dealing with the vigilante side of things put more than enough on her plate. Maybe there’d been drama she’d been blissfully unaware of.
“Cool, cool,” Steph said. She glanced longingly at her laptop, but Bruce, for once in his life, showed no signs of leaving the conversation alone.
“Do you think this course is wise?” Bruce continued, as though she had any idea what he was talking about.
“Who’s to say, really?” Steph tried, because she was floundering here. From Bruce’s unimpressed look, it was not an ideal answer.
