“I’ve never seen him without it,” Gaz said between them. Price gave a nod from the other side of Soap. They were all seated in a row at the bar, the golden glow of the lights casting everything in a warm haze.
“Funny, didn’t think ye were Catholic,” Soap licked his lips like he was nervous. His eyes still hadn’t left the small outline of Saint George.

“What? Why?” Eddie said, sitting up halfway to look at him.
“Cause I’m a really shitty guy. Even Nancy said so and she’s like the smartest person I know,” Steve mumbled, his eyes meeting Eddie’s dark ones. They were all crinkled up with confusion.
“You’re not a shitty person, Steve. At least, you’re not now,” he said and flopped back down next to him.

While most would have found this to be a rather uncharitable speech, Amanda knew this was tantamount to being a love letter. A single father on the Command track was not the Vulcan in ceremonial robes she had thought Spock would seek out for romance, but perhaps that was all the better.

It was three months after Jim had woken up from his coma. A lot had happened to everyone in this time. Spock terminated his relationship with Uhura. Kirk was having terrifying nightmares. Bones was threatening to hypo them both if they stayed up past three playing chess again. They were all being bombarded and harassed by the press and Starfleet. It was this that drove Spock to suggest something crazy. Something so unorthodox that it left both McCoy and Kirk wide-eyed with jaws on the floor.
