Summary
Like he’s been electrocuted, the ghost jolts backwards and his hand spasms in the air, like he wanted to reach out to Evan. Evan holds his polar bear teddy bear closer to his chest, the one that Maddie got for him at their school’s book fair, and waits.
The ghost waits, too.
Evan’s never been the most patient kid, though. “Are you lost?” Evan sits back, and the ghost starts to glisten, shimmering at the edges and looks close to disappearing from sight. “Are you going to keep coming back?” When Evan doesn’t get any response, sees nothing from the ghost to show he heard him, he asks one more question.
“Will you be my friend?”
And then he’s gone.
The window is still cracked open, and he still feels the breeze twist in his hair.

There’s a nudge at his hand, a careful tap that finally makes him look up for the first time since they got there. Evan wipes his face hastily, trying to sniffle up the water in his eyes before anyone can see. He doesn’t want to cry, but sometimes he just can’t help it.
Because that’s his brother. That’s his big brother, in a hospital bed, with dark smudges under his eyes and a really bad cough that keeps getting worse, but he’s smiling at Evan like it’s all going to be okay.
All Evan heard was the machine. He counted the sounds, hoarded them, and wished he could just sit there and listen to the proof of his brother’s heart beating forever.

“Fuck,” Eddie muttered harshly into the phone, his voice rough through the receiver.
“Eddie?” Buck called out, frowning. He lowered his phone from his ear to check the call, and yeah, still connected, full reception. He raises it back to his ear and catches the tail end of a noise, a choked-out groan. “Are you okay?”
“Buck,” Eddie panted, his breath coming out in heavy exhales. “Buck –”
Grabbing his keys, Buck makes it to the loft door, jacket half on when he stops dead in his tracks, phone still pressed to the side of his head as he hears Eddie in his ear.
“Yes, Buck, yes, yes, please, yes –”

He was so smart. His best friend was so smart and also wanted to kiss him and also said they were practically engaged.
“Good plan,” said Buck, fighting gravity to continue his way out the door. “It’s just one week. How hard could it be?”
