Summary
Will Byers was familiar with nightmares. They had plagued him for years, even if they hadn't always been about the Upside Down.
What he was not familiar with was shattered light bulbs and feelings of dread so intense he could only think of it similar to what he had felt in the field last year. Not from nightmares. Except he wasn't quite frozen. It felt almost like being beckoned closer, and he wasn't sure he knew if he could resist.

Will gets his powers in season 3 instead and has to navigate as he tries to figure out what it is that he's going through while dealing with other issues in his life. Featuring Byler endgame, wonder twins, and a progression of events just different enough to tweak things. (This will span across multiple seasons.)

Summary
Will doesn’t know how long this lasts for, just that when he finally stops weightlessly crashing into his own memories, it’s because he’s crushed the coffee cup in his hand, and scalding hot water splatters across his chest and lap.
At least, it feels scalding.
Because He likes it cold.
Will can’t do anything but stare at nothing, sweat dripping down his back. The feeling passes – there’s nothing tugging at him anymore. But he remains utterly frozen.
Turns out, there really is nowhere to run. No airplane that can take you high enough.
Stupid. So stupid.

It’s been 5 years since the Upside Down was destroyed, and with it, the Mind Flayer and his creatures. Will is running from the past; Mike can’t seem to move on from it. Lucas and Max are navigating what it might mean to be in it for life, and Dustin… well, he just misses the action. But it looks like he’s about to get what he wants, because the Mind Flayer wasn’t a singular entity, and some stories don’t end when they’re supposed to.

It’s been 18 months since Hawkins split. It’s been getting cold out. November 6th is coming. The Party has been preparing for the battle for a long time. Michael Wheeler can tell something is very, very wrong with the one person that the Upside Down continues to haunt.
William Byers is the key.
Hawkins isn’t prepared for what he will be forced to unlock.

Will is in a dark space. He’s not sure what direction the voice is coming from, but Will can tell the voice is getting louder.
You could never escape me.
Will instinctively covers his ears. Despite the taunts, Will wishes he could run.
You can never escape what you are.
Will feels a sharp tug in his forehead, and then his sight turns red.

"What are you doing here?" Mike's face dropped as his eyes slid from El, past Max, and over to Will, "And what are you doing with them?"
"Shopping," El said with a blank expression on her face.
Max smirked, "This is their new look, what do you think?"
"You know she's not allowed to be here. And Will, how could you just run off like that, we were worried!" Mike glared straight at Max despite the fact part of what he said was directed at Will.
"What are they, your little pets? El can't leave the cabin, and god forbid Will strays more than three feet from your shadow, despite the fact you were completely ignoring him!" Max snapped right back.

Or... A rewrite of Stranger Things season 3 where Will leaves the mall with El and Max and helps them investigate while growing closer to both girls and becoming more confident in himself. Meanwhile, Mike considers what it might mean for him that he's more upset that his best friend ditched him to hang out with someone else than he is about his girlfriend breaking up with him.
