A sputter of sound made Shane raise an eyebrow. Shane couldn’t see the look on the Ilya’s face, and he was confused. But when Ilya’s shoulders shook in silent laughter he got the gist immediately.
“Is this some kind of inside joke I’m not aware of?” Shane questioned.
Ilya stopped what he was doing and chuckled. “You think I am joking?” He responded, shaking his head with a smile before turning around. “This—” He gestured to his apron. “Is no joke, sweetheart.”

Summary
Knockout did not intend to keep any part of his conjunx's broken husk. After all, it wasn't Breakdown any more, and he didn't need a piece of metal to remind him of who his mate had been in life. So it was a surprise to him as well when he kept a piece anyway - the diamond plate that had adorned the front of Breakdown's beautiful crest. It was easier, in this one small thing, that it hadn't been his decision to do so. But now that he had it, he wasn't going to part with it, finding more comfort in the small token than he had expected.
Unfortunately, some other bot seems strangely fixated on ridding him of it. And that may not be the only thing the sparkless mad scientist has his emotionless gaze on.

It wasn't supposed to be this way. Certainly, it was close to what he'd originally wanted. But there was something just.... wrong, about the emptiness of it all. The pandemic had swept across the world in a matter of months, killing indiscriminately. He'd watched, plugged into every camera, every system, as the sickness spread, leaving only death in it's wake.
He'd thought North America barren of intelligent human life, until, six months after he'd disregarded the entire continent, one of his sentries, investigating some odd signals in a little town in Canada got run over by a woman joyriding around in a Lamborghini.
