“You’re so annoying,” Kevin complains. Pot, kettle. Aaron thinks about pointing this out to him, but Kevin’s hair is falling into his eyes, and his face isn’t twisted into a frown anymore, and he’s looking down at Aaron with the same focus he fixes upon anything he wants to keep, and it all makes something tighten in Aaron’s chest.
He reaches up, carding a hand through Kevin’s hair. “You have no room to talk,” Aaron tells him. Infuriatingly, his voice comes out fond. Probably not in a way that most people could clock, but Aaron can hear it. He suspects Kevin can too, which is one of the three worst things to happen to Aaron today, and less than twenty minutes ago, he managed to smash the head of the guy he was fucking into a headboard in a poorly-coordinated attempt at a kiss.
For the record, Kevin is mostly just being dramatic. Aaron, unfortunately, likes him anyway. Worst news of his fucking life.

“I’m not in denial,” Aaron says plainly. It’s not his own feelings he was ever worried about, he realizes—it’s always been the threat of Kevin’s that scares the shit out of him. Kevin, who has never known how to follow posted speed limits and runs reds because he can, because no one has ever told him he shouldn’t, probably likes him. Probably definitely. He’s afraid that one day he’ll realize he doesn’t.
Maybe that’s the heart of the issue. There’s precedence for this. Aaron has spent a long time being jerked around by people who love him for a period. It hurts, still, that his mother doesn’t know how to want him; that Andrew’s apathy is hard to interpret as caring sometimes; that Katelyn decided it wasn’t working after all. But that’s not very accurate data. Not that it matters. Kevin and him were never supposed to be together—that was their agreement.

Security was a concept Aaron was familiar with but did not deem himself often worthy of. It was the feeling of being safe and allowing the possibility of the rug being pulled from beneath you to happen. He'd grown used to feeling secure with Katleyn, it was a feeling reemerging with Andrew and it was one crashing into him when it came to Kevin.
