Summary
Ms. Mitaka spiraled in her head, as was per usual. Her pen moved in frantic loops, scribbling and rewriting the same lines of notes, never once glancing up from the page. A familiar centrifuge where logic suspends and separates into noise.
She didn’t notice the cage door was open.
Broken from her trance, she turned to her side, just a glance at the cuckoos in their cages.
She always felt guilty watching a caged bird. Creatures meant to ride thermals and trace the sky reduced to twitching shadows behind mesh and wire. But she had convinced herself this was different. She wasn’t here to tame or display them. She was here to understand. That made it justifiable. Didn’t it?
Better to be perceived inside of a cage, than to never be perceived at all.
Only after she had finished her internal tirade did she realize that her birds were missing.
A chill rushed down her spine. Somehow, in the span of only a few minutes, Asa Mitaka had managed to screw everything up
Asa and Denji are paired together on a group project, things do not go as anticipated

Summary
Asa, for her part, couldn’t have paid attention even if she wanted to, thoughts of that afternoon and of he-who-shall-not-be-named swirling in her head like a dead fish in a toilet bowl, refusing to flush.
She chewed on the second knuckle of her pointer finger on her right hand, gentle workings of teeth and jaw that pulsed dull ache down her joints. She did it whenever she was nervous, or had a problem she didn’t quite know how to solve. It was a nasty habit, one which she’d had for as long as she could remember and which had made her sport many a boo-boo and teary eyes that had to be wrapped and wiped away by hands kinder than she’d ever be.
She had memories of sitting at the dinner table in middle school, working on homework and gnawing on herself while her mom cooked dinner.
‘Tsk, tsk,’ her mother would tut as she turned the heat low and looked over at her. ‘Asa, dear, if you worry that thing any longer, the boys in class may just mistake you for a baited fish. What’s snagged you this time, honeybun?’
Well, Miss Mitaka?

"Huh?" Denji stepped back from her outstretched appendage, startled. "What do you mean?"
"You heard me! You stay, I'll be the one to leave and then you can go after."
"What the hell does that matter? Listen, lady, I have stuff to do. Business stuff. And it's on a need-to-make-rent basis, so don't even ask."
The fiend scowled and stomped her feet into the damp ground. "I have business stuff to do too! Important business and it's on a need to know basis so don't even ask!"
"I wasn't going to!"
"Say what? But it's super interesting!"

Before Chainsaw Man, it was just Pochita and Denji—two souls struggling to eke out an existence under the weight of an impossible debt. They had eachother, and they figured that was enough. But when various people see fit to invade their lives, demanding he learn things like hygiene, or nutrition, or the warmth of a hug and a homecooked meal, their lives get a whole lot more complicated.
But, hey, maybe having a family wasn't such a bad thing to get used to?

His left eye looked the same as it ever had. His right was a nightmare of a red iris surrounded by black sclera, pulsing black veins spiderwebbing out from around it.
Denji took a step toward the mirror.
The ghoul stepped with him.
Three more steps brought him up to the sink. He grabbed its edges, allowed his head to drop down, and let out a hoarse laugh that was nearly a sob. His head was an aching mess, but one clear thought managed to break through the haze. Aki was going to kill him.
Literally.

Or; Denji is the sort of person who would usually be able to take being turned into a flesh-eating monster in stride. If only his brother weren't one of Tokyo's top ghoul killers.
