In his past life, the only person who had ever been so gentle with him was his mother — and even that had been only temporary, as the rancid air of their poisonous home had gradually drained at her sanity until she could hardly stand the sight of him, much less hold him close like she once did.
Now, there is Hawks. The hero is gentle with him like his mother once was, as if he’s something more than the amalgamated patchwork monster that had risen from the grave of a dead boy with one singular task in mind: destroy his creator, no matter the cost.
Affection has never been his to keep for long. Dabi doesn’t know what to do with it.

"Birdie." Dabi calls out to him. No response. Not even a flinch or anything that would indicate Hawks heard him. His brows crease in confusion. He stands up, walking closer to Hawks with caution. Hawks doesn't stop feeling around, doesn’t falter, he doesn't do anything even as his eyes pass over Dabi, as though he wasn't even there.
"Hey. Hawks." Nothing.
Dabi curses under his breath, moving to stand in front of Hawks. He reaches out and touches the man's arm and that has Hawks flinching with a surprised gasp.
"Who's there?" Hawks asks loudly, too loud for the empty apartment. He shrinks away from Dabi. If he looks close enough, he can see Hawks trembling.
He touches Hawks' arm again but the man just slaps his hand away. "Don't t-touch me!"
Or;
Au where Hawks' feathers are literally the only source of his hearing and sight and the HPSC does something to him that leaves all his feathers dead. Dabi finds him blind and deaf and stays with him.
