“Eddie was amazing, of course,” Buck replies, balling his hand into a fist. “He offered to talk about it… but I’m not there yet.” A tear runs down his cheek, but Buck is barely aware of it. “I don’t… I think, um, I’m getting worse.”
Dr. Copeland frowns. “How do you mean, Buck?”
“I…” Buck trails off, staring at the wall behind Dr. Copeland’s head. “I’m not sure if I was made for… this. Sometimes… I just think it might be better if I… disappear or something. I just feel… not numb… just… nothing. I don’t feel anything. There’s brief emotions here and there. They pop up, flash suddenly, a spark of anger, a touch of joy or laughter. And, then they’re just…” Buck gestures vaguely, “gone, just like that. It’s like… on the surface, I feel the emotions, but inside my heart, it’s full of… nothingness. It’s just a void. So, even when I feel something… it doesn’t change that void, it doesn’t fill it. Nothing can fill it.”

Summary
Turning back to his book, he managed to read one line before a shadow appeared above him, and he glanced up to see caramel macchiato guy standing at the other side of the table, looking like he was waiting for something. He managed a “huh?” as he met the man’s (frankly gorgeous) blue eyes, with an adorable strawberry-red birthmark to the side of the left one.
“I said, do you mind if I sit here? There aren’t any other seats left.” He smiled shyly, showing a row of perfect white teeth. Eddie gazed around the café and saw that he was right. The seat across from him was the only one left in the entire place. It had been empty when he arrived, but he’d obviously been too engrossed in his reading to even notice that it had filled up quickly.
“No, go ahead.”

Eddie is curious about whoever ordered what he thinks is the most disgusting coffee drink known to man, and is surprised when he sits down opposite him.

After fighting to get back to his job, Buck is faced with complications that set him back again. Only Eddie is able to help him, but it only opens his eyes to the bigger picture; the team’s already replaced him. Eddie’s already replaced him. And it hurts in a way he never saw coming.
