A relief mission to a nearby town goes awry when a group of Achaeans capture first Paris, then Hektor. They might not be dead, and are guaranteed some small amount of safety while waiting for the arrival of the Atreidai, but there is a vast space between not dead and completely unharmed. There's also a couple days until the Achaean commanders arrive.
A couple days in the hands of the enemy. A couple days chance to find an opportunity to escape.

Bringing Paris back to Troy is the only thing he can see himself do, and in the years that follow, while he never regrets that decision, there is plenty of times to despair over his little brother's quirks, to marvel how he fits in, and be frustrated over how he doesn't.
