Buck was sent to camp green lake when he was fifteen, which is a sort of juvie camp, they have to dig a hole in the desert, 5 feet wide, 5 feet deep daily to build character and learn their lesson, and get treated poorly. But Buck was sent for a crime he never committed.

Someone had to stay behind and fix it so they could lift off."
Madi looks at him, her mouth parted in shock. "You stayed?"Murphy shrugs, suddenly feeling self-conscious. "I was the only one with nightblood."
"But you didn't know if it would work!" She cries out. Murphy shrugs again.
"But it did." He says simply. "Our radio connection- it broke during the wave. I call them every day anyways- just in case they can hear me. I can't hear them, though."
